Project Awakening pits soldiers against dragons in one beautiful action-RPG

CyGames, best known for mobile titles like Granblue Fantasy, announced one of its first console-exclusive games ahead of this year’s Tokyo Game Show: Project Awakening. The PlayStation 4 game, which is heading to both Japan and the U.S, looks stunning in its first trailer, even if it only hints at what the story could be about.

The description for the short clip only tells us this: “It’s time for the wolves of war to awaken.” It seems like our hero is contending with those “wolves,” whoever they are. Perhaps the giant dragon-monster he’s taken on is one of them?

Expect plenty of sword action against bloodthirsty monsters who have no qualms about beating the heck out of you either way. Also possible: These giant colossi-like monsters who face our hero at the very end. They don’t look like wolves, but perhaps we’re being too literal.

There’s a small selection of screenshots available, mostly pulled from the trailer. Otherwise, CyGames will likely trickle out information for the PS4 exclusive until ... whenever it’s expected to come out.

This game looks great but why does every video game protagonist have such a generic, boring, forgettable face, like they took 500 faces and just averaged them together. The reason they don’t have them wear helmets is to make it easier to empathize with them, but its like looking at a Ken doll with the optional beard accessory. Just put the helmet back on if you’re going to do that.

I see what you mean about the generic, Sexy Hollywood Leading Man-type face being uninspired and boring, but hey, at least it doesn’t have all the cringy uncanny valley of Dark Souls 3 faces (see: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.reddit.com/r/darksouls3/comments/4i47h2/npc_faces_seem_better_in_demon_souls_than_they )

The guy in this game’s trailer is at least aesthetically pleasant (and yes, kinda sexy), and if this ends up being a game that’s more about its world than it is about a silent or near-silent protagonist, then the generic-ness ain’t too big a deal.

There’s been research that shows that doing exactly this, averaging a bunch of people’s faces, gives you the face people consider most attractive. I’ll admit… that very average looking protagonist is pretty darn attractive.

I forget the details, but there was one study that found the exact opposite—that creating a composite averaging people’s faces was considered by the people in the study to be less attractive than faces that had some small deviation from average. I’ll link it if I can find the study.

And I’ve seen studies showing that most psychology studies end up being bullshit so what do I know.

Haha yeah, I’ve read about the "crisis of reproduceability" where, I forget exactly, but something like 70% of studies can’t be replicated.

Lol i dunno about these other posts saying hes attractive. But that completely boring look is exactly the first thing that popped into my head. Novel idea and cool hanging out with a dragon but that is the most generic guy I’ve ever seen.

Now, that is what I call next gen. At least in the graphic department looks incredible. I’ll definitely keep an eye for more news about this game.

It definitely seemed like the hero is one of the Wolves of War. The entire speech in the background is saying "we" multiple times as the hero is shown.

It is now time for we Wolves of War to awaken.
They don’t look like wolves, but perhaps we’re being too literal.

They also say, "We are the shield — that shall not break! We are the sword — that shall not bend!" and yet they’re clearly not walking, talking swords and shields.

C’mon, Allegra!

If this is actual gameplay footage I’m intrigued. The combat looks like they’re thinking about the realism behind fighting a monster like that and getting hit with all that raw muscle. That mentality alone is enough to hook me on this. I enjoyed Monster Hunter but the combat is just so monotonous, we need something like this.

Betting Microsoft is wishing they had shifted just a little bit of their fortune and resources to Scalebound. Its nice that they’re opening up studios now, but innovative projects like that deserved more attention. Instead we got Doldrums of Thieves and ReBore…

I hope they rename this. Calling anything "Project" is just bland and generic sounding now. It was a really good naming convention once upon a time.

"Awakening" is also bad. Its so passive. If they want to have a generic name call it "the Dragon Masters" or something pulpy that at least implies some adventure.

How about Wolves of War, it’s right there for the taking. It’s not super descriptive but it’s catchy.

The rights are probably tied up to some awful, never-heard-of-before grocery store-novel’s Title.

Sorry, Blizzard already trademarked WoW.

I’ve never actually seen a game which was called project in shops unless it was maybe about a project.

Dark Souls meets Monster Hunter?

Exciting, but that’s also a lot of hype to live up to.

i hope this guy has a personality when he’s not tracking/fighting big lizards

That would be nice… but to be honest, did the Soulsbourne protagonists ever have/need a personality?

I’m getting some Dragon’s Dogma vibes, which is a good thing.

mega-developer CyGames

… that I’ve somehow completely never heard of.

As of last September, 2017, GranBlue Fantasy had at least 17 Million active players. GranBlue is CyGames claim to fame, moreover than their other titles. It’s omnipresent in some countries. They’re huge.

Yeah, as someone who doesn’t do much mobile gaming, I definitely had to hit up Wikipedia. But I’m intrigued by the GranBlue thing they’re doing for consoles with Platinum.

I know it’s not the same game, but this reminded me of Capcom’s Deep Down. Whatever happened to that game?
