The Final Fantasy 7 remake will finally be released on March 3, 2020. Updated box art shows that it will be a PlayStation exclusive for a period of one year, until March 3, 2021.

The updated box art was spotted by eagle-eyed tipster Wario64, who dropped the image on Twitter. The new game cover includes a sticker in the lower right-hand corner. It’s unclear how the exclusivity will be applied to future episodes, since the remake will be split across multiple parts.

Announced in 2015 at Sony’s E3 press conference, not much information has been released about the scope of the remake’s first episode. At one point director Tetsuya Nomura said the game was simply announced too early. Over the last five years the project has undergone several changes, the biggest adjustment being a switch in developers. Originally the remake was being handled by an outsourcing company called CyberConnect2, which had experience with the Naruto series of games. Since 2017, production has been brought in-house.

Outside of a misstep by Xbox’s German team, which posted a trailer accidentally in July, Square Enix hasn’t made any official announcements on versions of Final Fantasy 7 Remake for Xbox One or Windows PC. News of the timed exclusivity all but confirms that more platforms will eventually see the game, though.

I wasn’t even expecting to come out before 2021 to be honest.

They announced the Spring 2020 date earlier this year, but yeah I was expecting delays too.

And it almost seems like a bluff that we’ll get more than one episode in 2020, which is a thought I would’ve found preposterous if it wasn’t for this announcement.

Am I missing something? What implies that we’ll get another episode in 2020?

It’s not specified at all, but exclusivity for the the rest of this 2020 makes very little sense to me for just one episode, unless they re-apply for a year of exclusivity for each episode.

Eh. It made more sense in my head yesterday.

I was looking forward to this, but waiting until now to announce timed exclusivity is a real dick move. There’s always plenty of new games to play so, when this does eventually launch on XB, I doubt i’ll bother with it now.

it probably just means PS5 tough, not xbox

If they want to recoup the money they’ve poured into this game it will have to release on Xbox and pc. No way they wouldn’t lose money if it’s ps4 only.
Also all squareenix games are multiplat now so it only makes sense.

Originally it was understood as a PS4 exclusive, so literally no one was harmed by this announcement. You don’t sound like you want to play the game in the first place though.

No, it was always announced as a timed exclusive. The only difference now is that we know for how long.

You don’t sound like you want to play the game in the first place though

senote, im going to have to ask for your Gamer Papers™ please you dont even sound like a real fan do you even know what a moogle is

What are you talking about? The very first trailer indicated that it was a timed exclusive for PS4. It said "Play it first on PS4". This was over 4 years ago.

Why is it a dick move? Just cancel your pre-order. A dick move woulda been not telling people till it after it was released. Your logic for not playing it makes no sense. You would only play it if its a ps4 exclusive?

I find the timed exclusivity for this rather absurd considering this is just the first in what will (probably) be a long line of chapters for the FFVII remake.

Sooo timed exclusive… wonder If they will release the rest of the chapters on ps4 and One or split it across generations(ps5, scarlet)

Each chapter will probably take 1-3 years to develop, so no way they release future chapters for a previous-gen console. The second chapter will probably be cross-gen, but with graphics such a big emphasis they probably want the latest tech like ray tracing.

It’s going to have to be split up. Can you imagine the PR nightmare that having part 1 on PS4 and Xbox One, and chapter 2 on Scarlett and PS5 would cause?

If the second one comes out after 2022, there’s no way in hell it’s on PS4 or Xbox One.

The way I look at it, is that if Square wanted to commit to releasing only on the next-gen consoles, then they would have simply delayed the remake to coincide with the releases of both the PS5 and Scarlett. But since they’re committing to the PS4 and Xbox One, then they have no choice but to release on both generation of consoles.

Not saying that it couldn’t happen, but never has a single game (granted they’re divided into chapters, but it’s still one game) started on one generation, only to be continued onto the next.

They’ve already said that the remake contains multiple standalone games to tell the stories. These are going to be viewed as sequels. I can’t see them releasing on Xbox One and PS4 in 2023, but we’ll see.

True we’ll see, I just hate to think that the only way possible to continue the story for gamers that are new to FFVII, is to purchase a brand new console. That’s quite a hefty fee to pay should you want to see how the story continues and/or ends.

Well to be fair here…we’re probably talking about more than 2 games…so if it is in fact more than 2 games that scenario you just laid out is pretty much a given. I mean lets say #2 hits in 2022…best case scenario…#3 probably doesn’t hit until at least 2024/2025. The Playstation 4 has been dead for 4 or 5 years by that point and is 11 to 12 years old. I just don’t see it happening. There’s a shot, especially if they get #2 out in 2022 that we see #2 cross generation, but there’s nearly no shot we see the follow up.

Not saying that couldn’t happen, but if that is the case, how nuts is it that it takes multiple games, over multiple years, to tell a single story that most gamers already know? The FFVII Remake is either going to be truly revolutionary, or filled with a ton of monotonous fluff.

We’re going to get to find out. I’m cautiously optimistic…Square has been really hit or miss or since X, X-2, but I think they really the importance of this one. That doesn’t mean they still won’t fuck it up…but I mean the fact that part one didn’t take 10 years is at least a good sign.

In fairness, the story of Final Fantasy VII is currently available to experience in full on literally every current gen platform.
