Fallout 76 is getting a free weekend and a Halloween do-over in December

Bethesda Game Studios/Bethesda Softworks

Starting on Dec. 12, people who don’t own Fallout 76 will be able to play the game for free until Dec. 16. For those that do own Fallout 76, they’ll soon be able to score double XP and a chance to score some holiday-themed loot, both Christmas-y stuff and Halloween stuff.

Next weekend’s free trial for Fallout 76 will arrive shortly after Update 16 for the online multiplayer Fallout game. Update 16 is currently set for release on Tuesday, Dec. 10, Bethesda says, which will bring about map voting for the battle royale-style Nuclear Winter mode and new privacy settings for private worlds.

Fallout 76 will get into the holiday spirit starting Dec. 12 with Holiday Scorched enemies, who will wear Santa gear and drop presents of varying desirability. Players can also score a free Santatron from the game’s Atomic Shop. Santatron will roam the area near your CAMP to collect treats for you, like candy, toys, and coal.

Players will also have nearly a month’s worth of holiday events to take part in, including a makeup week for a Halloween event that ended earlier than expected. Here are the dates for those events, during which players can score cosmetic goodies:

Console players will need to have an active Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus subscription in order to play the free trial. The trial won’t include any Wastelanders content, but the base game will be free throughout the trial period. Any progress made during the free trial will move over to the full game, if you decide to purchase it, as long as you’re using the same account.

…I mean, they’re still going full hypocrite on their "cosmetic only" sales and becoming a pay to win game? Not sure why anyone should support this.

No one at Bethesda ever uttered the words "cosmetic only." They just said guns & armor would not be in the Atomic Shop, only skins for them. People ran wild and assumed that was a cosmetics-only policy.

And seriously, the only non-cosmetic items in the shop are… repair kits & a bot that very, very slowly gathers random junk.

I play the game and it gets a bad rap quite often, but I do have to correct you: Pete Hines specifically said cosmetics only. They did make and break that promise and Hines is a VP of marketing so he’s definitely an authority on what the game would and would not do. The games media also reported it as cosmetics only and non-Hines Bethesda reps never once tried to correct that impression.

That stated, I don’t agree with the other dude concerning pay to win. Right now it’s a borderline case IMO, though if they push the line further it could be P2W one day.

I get enough work during the week thanks

Going to need a free month if you really want people to give your game a shot. I think the negative publicity has soured our interest.

They’re not trying to pull in naysayers, they’re trying to pull in neutrals who don’t pay attention to games media or don’t care what it has to say.

Everytime I try to give this game another chance, there is an entirely new game breaking patch and I CBF anymore

lol Free weekend. What an absolute joke.

Fallout 76 is 45gb with a 54gb day one patch, and that just gets you to wherever they were a dozen massive patches ago. By the time I’m done downloading and installing and updating, how much "weekend" is going to be left?

Come talk to me when it’s a free week or month, Beth, and I’ll see if I can find an appointment for you.

I’m nitpicking but if you install a digital copy of a Fallout 76 now, I doubt you’ll have to install a day-one patch. Day-one patches happen by definition on day one after release.
But other than that I agree with you.

The patch was for consoles only and most of it came from the beta time. Stupid people exaggerate the shit out of its importance.

My current file size is 75g and takes as long as most other games to install. I could download this game from McDonalds wifi and be playing in an hour.

One has to admire the determination in a bizarre way.

I won’t waste my time again.

hmmmm
