Byron is the sixth gym leader in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and he’s a steel-type specialist in Canalave City. Our Canalave gym leader guide will assist you by listing out his party and recommending counters that you can find nearby.

Canalave City gym challenge

The Canalave City gym is a series of lifts that take you around in a maze. This, again, is a pretty straightforward puzzle. If the path has trainers on it to battle, you’re going the correct direction. Keep following the trainers, taking them down, until you get to Byron.

Byron’s Pokémon

Byron uses steel-type Pokémon, which means that most of them are thick and have high defensive stats. He uses the following:

  1. Bronzor, level 36, steel/psychic
  2. Steelix, level 36, steel/ground
  3. Bastiodon, level 39, rock/steel

Byron counters

Annoyingly enough, two of Byron’s Pokémon are also ground- and rock-type, negating any super effective fire-type moves. You can still use ground- and fighting-type moves on these Pokémon to dish out damage. Keep in mind that since his Pokémon are natively more defensive, they might not K.O in one move like how others do.

Here are some counters you can use:

  • Ponyta, fire
    Route 206, 211, 215
  • Quagsire, water/ground
    Route 212, Safari Zone
  • Machoke, fighting
    Route 210, 211

Byron gym rewards

Once you beat Byron, you’ll be able to use the HM Strength outside of battle, so you can push rollable rocks around to clear paths. He’ll also give you several copies of TM91, so you can teach your Pokémon Flash Cannon, a steel-type move that may lower the opposing Pokémon’s special defence. You’ll also get some stickers to decorate your Poké Balls with.
