How to take down the ice-type gym leader

Candice is the seventh gym leader in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and she’s a ice-type specialist in Snowpoint City. Our Snowpoint gym leader guide will assist you by listing out her party and recommending counters that you can find nearby.

Snowpoint City gym challenge

Candice’s gym requires you to slide around on ice, gliding down slopes to break big snowballs in the way of Candice, with some non-slippery platforms in between. Fight all the trainers around first, so you can freely skate around. If you get stuck on where to slide to break a snowball, work backward from the snowball, rather than trying to move from platforms.

Candice’s Pokémon

Candice uses ice-type Pokémon, with one exception:

  1. Snover, level 38, grass/ice
  2. Sneasel, level 38, dark/ice
  3. Medicham, level 40, fighting/psychic
  4. Abomasnow, level 42, grass/ice

Candice has an affinity for switching out her Pokémon, so if you have a good type match-up against her, don’t be surprised if she swaps one of her Pokémon for another.

Candice counters

Your best bet against Candice is to use fire-, rock- or fighting-type moves against her Pokémon. However, her Medicham will throw a wrench in any plain to sweep her team with a rock-type Pokémon, since its fighting-type moves will pose a problem. You can bring ghost-type moves to get rid of the Medicham quickly.

You can find some counters in the following locations:

  • Ponyta, fire
    Route 206, 211, 215
  • Geodude, rock/ground
    Route 206, 211
  • Machoke, fighting
    Route 210, 211

Candice gym rewards

Once you beat Candice, you’ll be able to use the HM Rock Climb outside of battle, allowing you to climb up jagged cliff edges. She’ll also give you several copies of TM72, so you can teach your Pokémon Avalanche, a powerful ice-type move that does double damage if the user takes damage. You’ll also get some stickers to decorate your Poké Balls with.
