Magikarp will be spawning in abundance in Pokémon Go for its own Community Day.

The event will take place on Aug. 8 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. in your local time. Use this opportunity to rake in the Magikarp candy and find yourself a golden Shiny Magikarp.

How do I get a Shiny Magikarp?

Since Magikarp will be popping up everywhere, just tap every Magikarp you see until you get a Shiny one. You’ll find one sooner or later, as the Shiny rate on Community Days is boosted to about a one in 24 rate.

What move does Gyarados learn?

If you evolve your Magikarp into a Gyarados on Aug. 8 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. in your local time, it will learn the move Aqua Tail. This is a useful PvP move, so make sure to evolve one of your Magikarps during the event period if you’re into PvP.

How do I make the most of this Community Day?

Any used Incense during the event period will last three hours, so make sure to use one if you have some. Stardust obtained from catching Pokémon will also be tripled, so if you’re out catching a ton of Magikarp, you should consider using a Star Piece as well.

If you want a Gyarados for doing raids and gyms, the best moveset for it is Waterfall and Hydro Pump, meaning you don’t need to evolve it during the Community Day event period. If you’re into PvP, give it Dragon Breath as a quick move and Aqua Tail and Crunch as charge moves.

Keep in mind that Magikarp also needs a whopping 400 candy to evolve into Gyarados, so we recommend using Pinap Berries to help you collect as many Magikarp Candies as you can.

If you’re deciding which Shiny Magikarp to evolve at the end of the day, try using one of the new search strings. Sort your ‘mons by “recent” using the lower right icon, then type “4*” in the search box at the top. This will let you know if you have any 100% IV Magikarp. Most people won’t be so lucky, so next you’ll want to type “3*” in the search box, which will show you any recent ‘mons that are 80% or above. Appraise these to see which one is best and then evolve your new buddy!
