Pokémon Go Porygon Community Day guide: Best movesets and start times

Porygon is finally getting its chance to shine in a Pokémon Go Community Day.

The event will take place on Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. in your local time zone. Play Pokémon Go during this time to see a ton of Porygon spawning in the wild and rake in that Porygon candy.

How do I get a Shiny Porygon?

Since Porygon will be popping up everywhere, just tap every Porygon you see until you get a Shiny one. You’ll find one sooner or later, as the Shiny rate on Community Days is boosted to about a one in 24 rate.

What special move does Porygon-Z learn?

When evolved from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in your local time on Sept. 20, Porygon-Z will learn Tri Attack. This attack has a chance to lower the attack and defense of the opposing Pokémon when used in PvP battles, but it’s still not a great move.

How do I make the most of this Community Day?

Incense will last for three hours during the event period, rather than 30 minutes, so use one to grab as many Porygon as you can. Catch XP will also be tripled, so consider using a Lucky Egg to boost your XP if you’re catching a lot of creatures.

For raiding and gyms, give your Porygon-Z Charge Beam and Solar Beam. Other electric- and grass-type Pokémon will outclass Porygon-Z in DPS, but if you really want to use it, those are the best moves.

For PvP, set it up with Lock-On with Blizzard and Zap Cannon. Porygon-Z in PvP is less than ideal, since its charge moves take a long time to build up.

Keep in mind that you’ll need an Upgrade to evolve Porygon into Porygon2 and you’ll need a Sinnoh Stone to turn Porygon2 into Porygon-Z. These evolution items will be provided as rewards from Timed Research available on Sept. 20, so make sure to complete them if you need the items.

If you’re deciding which Shiny Porygon to evolve at the end of the day, try using one of the new search strings. Sort your ‘mons by “recent” using the lower right icon, and then type “4*” in the search box at the top. This will let you know if you have any 100% IV Porygon. Most people won’t be so lucky, so next you’ll want to type “3*” in the search box, which will show you any recent ‘mons that are 80% or above. Appraise these to see which one is best, and then evolve your new buddy!
