Pokémon Go’s most exotic regional exclusive won’t be easy to find

To find one of Pokémon Go’s new region-exclusive Pokémon, you may have to take a vacation. Members of The Silph Road subreddit have found substantial evidence that Relicanth, one of the rarest Pokémon introduced in the game’s third-generation update, can only be found around a handful of countries in the Pacific Islands.

Players have reported finding Relicanth in just a few areas: Fiji, New Caledonia and Vanatu, as well as New Zealand, the most populous of the four. With just around six million people living in these countries combined, not many Pokémon Go trainers have seen the coveted water- and rock-type.

The ones that have, though, are piping up on The Silph Road to confirm their sightings. The consensus is now that Relicanth, a 100 million-year-old Pokémon that’s described as “a rare species” in the official Pokédex, is staying put in the Pacific Island region for now.

That makes Relicanth the fifth new region-exclusive Pokémon as of Pokémon Go’s last major update. Also tough to find are Plusle and Minun, the cute electric-types, and Zangoose and Seviper. Both of these pairs are separated across continents for reasons familiar to anyone who played Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire: All four are exclusive to just one of the two games. For Zangoose and Seviper, that separation is explained in-game; the two Pokémon are mortal enemies, requiring them to be kept apart.

Plusle and Zangoose have been found in western parts of North America, the Arabian peninsula and a number of African countries, according to The Silph Road. Minun and Seviper, meanwhile, have been spotted in Australia, a number of northern Middle Eastern countries and several island nations in Europe.

While I may not be the most obsessive Pokémon Go collector, I’ll take any reason to travel — so if anyone needs me to catch them a Relicanth, hit me up.
