Over the weekend, the Pokémon Go Twitter account began teasing an upcoming update, leading to three new images posted today. There are three figures visible in the images, with the iconic Team Rocket R also shown.
While nobody (well, outside of Niantic and The Pokémon Company) knows exactly who these figures are or what’s going on, there’s a good amount of speculation on who these mystery people are. The prevailing theory is that these three figures are Team Rocket bosses, meant to foil the three team leaders we have now: Candela, Blanche, and Spark.
Players are also speculating that the three bosses will be represented with Shadow versions of Moltres, Articuno, and Zapdos. We’re guessing that the Rocket bosses will be able to be battled at special PokéStops, similar to the grunts we battle now, or that the bosses will require players to team up and take them down at a taken over gym, with a Shadow Legendary bird as a reward. Shadow Pokémon are rewards for taking out Team Rocket grunts, so the Shadow reward for taking down a boss should be something big and exciting.

The other theory, which could also go hand-in-hand with the Rocket boss idea, is that a Rotom is behind the corruption. In 2018, there was a Special Research Task set released during October, which rewarded a Spiritomb, a Pokémon that can only be caught in specific conditions in the mainline games. Recently the task was renamed to “A Spooky Message 2018,” meaning that players may get a new Spooky Message for 2019 featuring Rotom, which is also a ghost-type. Rotom also just corrupted a file on the Pokémon Sword and Shield website, so the idea is fresh in player minds.
