Monday, Pokémon lovers, movie fans and basically everyone online got the first look at 2019’s Detective Pikachu, the first ever live-action Pokémon movie, starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular crime-solving Pikachu. The movie was chock full of realistically rendered Pokémon and nods to the franchise, fueling debates and discussions about whether or not this furry version of Pikachu looked alright and what this meant for the Pokémon world at a whole.

It also sparked loads and loads of memes. There was something about these very real-looking Pokémon that just leant itself perfectly to real-life comparisons.

It wasn’t just Pikachu who people started comparing. Mr. Mime has its own ... distinct look.

The Detective Pikachu trailer also neatly lined up with the use of a shocked Pikachu meme. Naturally, people charted the progression from Pikachu’s first appearance to its latest furry one.

There was a very specific meme’d movie that people started to cross Detective Pikachu over with: A Star is Born. Jigglypuff, of course, evoking the same strong stage presence as Lady Gaga.

The movie comparisons don’t stop there.

Others imagined the type of movie that Detective Pikachu could’ve been with a specific different voice actor or a totally gritty feel to it.

Detective Pikachu comes to theaters on May 10, 2019.
