Pokémon CG movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, has a new trailer

Coming to Japanese theaters on July 12

The next Pokémon film, Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, gets a new trailer today. The film arrives in Japanese theaters on July 12.

Evolution’s computer-generated art style made waves when it debuted in January. It’s quite a departure for the series, which has adopted a hand drawn style over the years. More heartening for fans, the film appears to be a remake of the original film, Pokémon the First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back, which came out in 1998.

A July release date makes this the second Pokémon film to be released this year. Detective Pikachu came out in May. The live action movie earned high marks from critics, including here at Polygon.

There’s also a new pair of Pokémon video games headed to the Nintendo Switch on Nov. 15. Called Pokémon Sword and Shield, we had a brief preview at this year’s E3 in Los Angeles. Game Freak’s latest effort looked “spectacular,” and should allow the franchise to “finally deliver on its biggest promises by rendering our favorite creatures in lush HD.”
