Pokémon’s next anime season gets a new look and a new sidekick

Meet Gou and his Scorbunny!

Julia Lee (she/her) is a guides producer, writing guides for games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Genshin Impact. She helped launch the Rift Herald in 2016.

After the latest episode of the Pokémon anime aired in Japan, a trailer for the upcoming season was shown, showing off new designs and hints about where the series is going.

Ash has a new look, as expected, and the art style has shifted again, to be more of a blend of the serious style used in Pokémon the Series: XY and the cartoony style we saw in Pokémon the Series: Sun and Moon.

Ash’s new companion is a boy named Gou, whose dream is to find Mew and catch many Pokémon. Though the new season will likely have a bunch of Pokémon from the Galar region, the region that Pokémon Sword and Shield is set in, it seems like Ash and Gou will spend the season traveling all over the place, based on the background shown in the video.

The background shows a lot of iconic monuments from different regions: the Indigo Plateau from Kanto, the Bell Tower from Johto, Mt. Chimney from Hoenn, Mt. Coronet from Sinnoh, the Driftveil Drawbridge from Unova, and the Prism Tower from Kalos. Alola is represented by palm trees, and the upcoming Galar region is shown with a Big Ben-esque building. Eighth-gen Pokémon like Yamper and legendaries Zacian and Zamazenta also appear.

Not very much has been revealed about the new season, which makes sense — Pokémon Sword and Shield doesn’t come out until November, and The Pokémon Company likely does not want to spoil any big reveals.
