Singer Katy Perry dropped her new single, “Electric,” on Thursday night, and the video for that new song includes a very special guest star: Pikachu! It’s cheery, adorable, and includes lyrical references to the Pokémon anime’s classic theme song. But the video also features plenty of shockingly reckless timeline-manipulating machinations by Perry and Pikachu.
In “Electric,” Pikachu and Katy Perry visit the Time Lighthouse, where the two travel backward in time to alter the singer’s past. We see a young Katy Perry jamming with Pichu, at the most nascent stages of her career. Perry and Pikachu then alter reality by pushing the teenage version of the singer to enter a talent show and helping her discover a sweet vintage statement jacket. Young Perry, naturally, finds inner strength and confidence, leading to a successful music career. One has to wonder what our reality would have been like had Katy Perry never acquired the Chrono Babushka and tricked Pikachu into powering the Time Lighthouse for her own selfish gain ...
Katy Perry’s “Electric” is just one component of The Pokémon Company’s musical celebration of the Pokémon franchise’s 25th anniversary. She joins artists Post Malone (who covered Hootie and the Blowfish’s “Only Wanna Be With You” and performed an animated concert with Pokémon during which he was incinerated by Charizard) and J Balvin for a music project known as Pokémon 25: The Album. That digital album will be released later this year and will include 14 Pokémon-inspired tracks.
