Guacamelee sequel on the way to PlayStation 4

DrinkBox Studios double-dips with its 2013 hit

Guacamelee 2 is coming “soon-ish” to PlayStation 4. The sequel to DrinkBox Studios’s zany platformer from 2013 was announced at Sony’s keynote event during Paris Games Week 2017.

No release date was specified. Because the game was announced at a Sony event, it’s unclear if it will be coming to other platforms.

The sequel will feature four-player co-operative gameplay, and other gameplay mechanisms, such as a grappling hook. The trailer and a short gameplay demonstration that followed it provided few additional details.

Guacamelee! is a stylish metroidvania in which a luchador hero is tasked with saving a remote village from the clutches of evil. The game was a breakout hit for DrinkBox.

The first Guacamelee! launched in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. It was followed by Guacamelee!: Super Turbo Championship Edition with additional levels and bosses in 2014. The game was free on PlayStation Plus for a month in 2015.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly identified the launch platform for Guacamelee. The post has been revised.
