Completing Red Dead Redemption 2’s Challenges is a great way to earn some better gear — if you can figure out how to complete them. Some of the Challenges are easy enough, like skinning three deer or catching three bluegills. But others — even among the first few ranks — are surprisingly difficult to complete (we already wrote about how to collect three perfect rabbit pelts for Master Hunter Challenge Rank 2 and how to find all four species of berries).
This guide will help you complete Horseman Challenge Rank 6: “Ride from Strawberry to Saint Denis in under nine minutes without touching any water.” Unlike some other Challenges that you can kind of accidentally complete, this one requires some (a lot of) planning.
The first thing you’ll need to complete this Challenge is the right horse — your starter horses just aren’t going to cut it. If you’re far enough along in the game — and have enough money — to buy an Arabian, that’s the right choice. If not, you can always find one for free pretty early on. (We did this Challenge with a Thoroughbred that cost $450 at the Strawberry Stable — it’s only marginally faster than the white Arabian, though.) And make sure you’re well-bonded with your horse so its Stamina Core and Ring are strong.
You’ll also need good tack — specifically, the best Stirrups you can afford. Stirrups will add to your horse’s max speed and affect your horse’s Core’s drain rates while saddles just affect the drain rates.
Finally, stock up on Horse Stimulants. You can buy a Potent Horse Stimulant for a few dollars at a Stable. It’s a little pricey, but you don’t need a ton of them — we only used three on our trip.
Plan your trip with our map
Riding from Strawberry to Saint Denis without touching water means you can’t ford any rivers. And that means you have to choose your route pretty carefully, or else you’ll end up wasting a lot of time riding in the wrong direction just to avoid getting wet.
Luckily, trains don’t like to get wet either — and they tend to travel in straight lines.
Here’s how to do it:
- Start in Strawberry on the north side of the river near the Post Office.
- Use a Horse Stimulant before you get started.
- Ride southeast out of town toward Riggs Station. You can set a waypoint on your map to guide you there.
- At Riggs Station, turn right onto the train tracks.
That’s actually kind of it. Just keep riding straight along the train tracks until you get to Saint Denis. There are a couple other things to keep in mind, though:
- Listen and watch behind you for trains. We didn’t run into this problem, but it seems like a good thing to worry about.
- You don’t have to use another Horse Stimulant the moment the last one runs out, but don’t let the ring drain — and dip into your horse’s Core.
This route let us finish the trip in just under nine minutes, so don’t dawdle and don’t get distracted.
