Resident Evil 2 Leon [2nd] walkthrough Part 14: NEST Laboratory — E-02 East Area

The entire East Area, but different

RE2 remake NEST Laboratory — E-02 East Area Capcom via Polygon

We’re back in another are you’ve already been to, but this Resident Evil 2’s NEST Laboratory E-02 East Area walkthrough is more more than a copy and paste job. Things have changed — some for the better, some … not so much.

In this guide, we’ll go through the entire East Area, but in a different order than than you did as Claire. And we’ll teach you the best thing we learned in any of our guides: How to turn two deadly Lickers into non-issues.

Lobby

Enter Resident Evil 2’s NEST Lobby and grab the Green Herb on the reception desk and the Gunpowder on the desk behind. There’s also a Typewriter and an Item Box here. Equip your Flamethrower, which is awesome.

The room to the south is locked. Enter the door to the Presentation Room.

OBJECTIVE: UPGRADE YOUR ID WRISTBAND

Presentation Room

You can interact with the corpse on the other side of the glass to see the upgrade you’re looking for. Now you just have to get to it.

Follow the path around, picking up the High-Grade Gunpowder (Yellow) on a tray in the next room. Use your Flamethrower to kill the Ivy. After you knock it down, hit it a few more times with fire. When it turns back, you’re done. It won’t get up again.

Killing Ivy with the Flamethrower is so much better than the Rocket Launcher
Capcom via Polygon

Be conservative with your Flamethrower Fuel. It’s the best offense against Ivy, who are infinitely annoying and all around here. If you’re careful with your aim, you can turn an Ivy black with about 30-40 Fuel. (Our best is 26, and we’ve never been so happy about anything in our entire lives.)

Greenhouse Control Room

Grab the Flash Grenade directly in front of you. Interact with the Facility Control Terminal, and you’ll see that you need a code. Interact with the Solution Sprinkler System, and you’ll receive the Dispersal Cartridge.

Greenhouse

Inside the Greenhouse, turn left, and pick up the Red Herb. Walk slowly around the room, and kill the Ivy with fire. Collect the Blue Herb. (Once again, you’ve collected a three herbs that you can combine to create a Mixed Herb, and you should totally do that.)

Note the pattern on the box that leads to the ladder.

Head into the Drug Testing Lab, because why not?

Drug Testing Lab

Read the Herbicide Synthesis note on the counter next to the sink.

There’s a machine locked with a cage here. You can see the L7 code clearly, but the rest are obscured. Interact with it, and you’ll get a new …

OBJECTIVE: DESTROY PLANT 43

There’s a Hand Grenade sitting next to a corpse wearing a yellow hazard suit. There’s also Gunpowder (Large) on the east side of the central desks.

Now head back through the Greenhouse to the Greenhouse Control Room.

(You’re relatively close to your Item Box, so feel free to make a few trips back and forth to free up your inventory and store any items that you can’t pick up.)

Greenhouse Control Room

Enter the pattern and return here to open the hatch and get access to the ladder. Our code (Tetris, colon, F, Roman numeral II) may be different than yours.

Greenhouse

Descend the ladder you unlocked, and search the dead end for Gunpowder (Large) and the Research Lab East Area Map. Open the door to the next hallway.

Lounge

The hallway leads to several rooms, some of which are locked. Continue into the Lounge, and pick up:

  • Shotgun Shells on a bench
  • Green Herb on a bench along the southern wall

The Trophy isn’t here, but we’ll get it soon.

Blow the heads off of every napping zombie in the area to make sure they never get up.

There’s a Circuit Breaker labeled URF in the corner near the vending machines. Crack that code with your Signal Modulator.

Instead of going back upstairs, head into the Server Room, which you just unlocked.

Server Room

Head here to collect some High-Grade Gunpowder (Yellow), a Combat Knife, and Flamethrower Fuel. There’s also a Typewriter and an Item Box. Feel free to scour the area for things you didn’t collect and do some inventory swapping.

Lounge

Read this section first for the best thing we’ve ever figured out about Resident Evil 2. (Can you tell we’re excited?)

Now head back to the Lounge and down the hallway away toward the stairs, Lickers will appear in the hallway leading to the Low-Temp Testing Lab (which isn’t locked in your [2nd] run).

Claire’s Grenade Launcher is great for Lickers. Nothing Leon has is. But there’s a way to get through here without firing a shot or alerting the Lickers. Here’s what to do:

  1. Walk down the hallway toward the stairs.
  2. Pull out your sub-weapon. It doesn’t matter which. All that matters is that you’re walking slowly.
  3. When the Lickers appear, they won’t be able to sense you because you’re walking slowly.
  4. Move left and walk through the door.

Here’s what that looks like:

Crazy, right?

The video above stops just before we pick up the Trophy. Do that, examine it in your inventory to find the next code for the Greenhouse Control Room, and head back to the hallway. The Lickers are gone.

Crazy, right?

Turn left, and head to the stairwell.

Lounge Stairwell B2 to B1

There are four zombies to deal with throughout the stairwell and into the room at the top:

  1. Watch for the zombie on your right as soon as you enter. Just kill it now, mostly because of what you’re about to find.
  2. As you ascend the staircase, you’ll find an Ivy. That’s fin and new. Burn it with fire.
  3. A third zombie will fall from above you as you make your way up. Kill it, too.
  4. In the room at the top of the stairs, kill another zombie. (You have the sightline for a headshot as you stand outside of the room.)

Sweep the room at the top to collect the following:

  • High-Grade Gunpowder (Yellow) near the door where you came in
  • Large-caliber Handgun Ammo in a locker just up the wall from that door
  • Somebody’s Note on a chair

(If something feels like it’s missing here, you’re probably thinking of the Signal Modulator, which isn’t here because you already picked it up.)

Unlock the door to return to the Lobby, where you can offload some equipment and save.

Greenhouse Control Room

Return to the Greenhouse Control Room with your Flamethrower equipped, ready to kill the Ivy along the way.

RE2 remake Leon [2nd] Greenhouse Control Room second code Trophy Capcom via Polygon

Enter the code from the Trophy. That’s ours above, but yours may be different.

Drug Testing Lab

Go to the Drug Testing Lab, and interact with the machine you’ve given yourself access to — the Solution Dispenser. It’s not nearly as difficult as it seems, but you can refer back to the note if you need help.

Place an empty cartridge into the Solution Dispenser
Add the required amount of UMB No.21
Cool immediately

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Blue
  2. Red
  3. Green
  4. Red
  5. Blue
  6. Red
  7. Blue
  8. Green
  9. Blue
  10. Red
  11. Green

Or you can just keep rotating and filling until the liquid on the left is the same level as the red ring round one of the tubes. It won’t take more than a minute. The moment it happens, you’ll receive the Dispersal Cartridge (Solution).

If you head back to the Greenhouse Control Room again and put the cartridge back where you got it, you’ll receive this message:

ERROR: Solution temperature is outside acceptable range.

So now you’ve got to cool it downstairs.

Walk, and the Lickers can’t sense you
Capcom via Polygon

Head back downstairs, through the stairwell, and make sure you’re walking (not running) out of the stairwell and into the Lobby. If you skipped the Lickers, they’re back, but they can’t hear you if you walk.

Enter the Low-Temp Testing Lab.

Low-Temp Testing Lab

As you're walking through, interact with the computer to read Wayne Li’s Inbox.

Enter the lab, listen to Leon make a joke, and pick up the Gunpowder on the table near the window. Interact with the Cooling System to lower the temperature of your Dispersal Cartridge (Solution). It will return to your inventory as Dispersal Cartridge (Herbicide).

Greenhouse Control Room

Make your way back to the Control Room, and interact with the Solution Sprinkler System to unleash the herbicide.

OBJECTIVE: UPGRADE YOUR ID WRISTBAND
OBJECTIVE: GET THE ANTIVIRAL AGENT IN THE WEST AREA

Enter the Greenhouse, and pick up the Electronic Chip. At at this point (sigh), your old pal Tyrant will arrive. Run back through the Greenhouse toward the Lobby, dodging the new Ivy (double sigh) who appear in the Greenhouse.

Don’t be shy with your Flamethrower at this point. In fact, it’s good peace of mind to burn Tyrant down to one knee. And you’ve already collected everything you can in this area, so you don’t have to stick around until the Ivy become crispy and charred. Your only objective is to get out of here.

Presentation Room

Interact with the Senior Staff PC to read Byron Cartwright’s Inbox.

Main Shaft

Head back to the Main Shaft, and interact with the terminal there to reach the next area.
