Jeffrey Parkin (he/him) has been writing video game guides for Polygon for almost seven years. He has learned to love just about every genre of game that exists.

Resident Evil Village’s “Find the house with the red chimney” objective takes you through the Cermony Site, Lone Road, Altar, Maiden of War, Workshop, and the eponymous house with a red chimney areas where you’ll find RE8’s Winged Key, two Goats of Warding, a jack handle, an M1911 handgun, a couple lockpicks, the Four-Winged Key, and the well wheel key items.

In this Resident Evil 8 walkthrough, we’ll help you collect every item — like ammo, lei, rusted scrap, herbs, crystal fragments, and more — and find every key item with our maps and screenshots.

Table of contents

Look for Rose

Inside the Craftsman’s House, head to the west and step out through the broken window. Take a left and find some gunpowder in the outhouse. There’s another crank-less well out here. Head back through the window.

Our next steps are laid out in the Craftsman’s Note:

Go through the caves to the ruins, then down into the village.

Back outside, the caves are to the right.

Cave tunnel

Shoot the lock on the Cave doors with your handgun and head inside.

Follow the tunnel. There’s no ammo to pick up along the way, but when you hit the water, shoot the fish to gather them. (We’ll use these at the end of this guide.)

Step through the door at the end to have another conversation with the old woman.

When she leaves, check the table/altar in the middle of the room for the Winged Key.

Use it to unlock the door to the south. Follow the tunnel up and use the switch to open the door into the Ceremony Site.

Ceremony Site

Straight ahead, there’s a huge seal on the ground with a familiar pattern, but you can’t do anything here yet. Take a left and continue northeast.

When you pass through the arch, take a right. There’s a crate with sniper rifle ammo at the end of the path.

Head back to the main path and take the stairs down. Use your sniper rifle to deal with the lycans on the bridge.

At the other end of the bridge, take a left and follow the stairs down. We can’t lower the bridge yet, but if you loop back to the left, you’ll find a Goat of Warding inside the room under the bridge.

Head back to the bridge and take the stairs up to the east.

Lone Road

At the top of the stairs, take a right. In the room there, grab the rusted scrap. On the left side of the road, there’s a similar room. Deal with the lycan inside, and then smash the crate for some metal scrap.

Just before you hit the gate leading out, take a right. There’s a locked box in that room we’ll need to return to later.

Push through the gate.

Altar

Take the stairs down to the altar to trigger another (disturbing) conversation with Duke.

He will also point you to the house with the red chimney.

Cash in your Crystal Dimitrescu for 25,000 lei and do any shopping you’d like. He sells a pipe bomb recipe now, along with a few new weapon upgrades.

When you’re done, visit the typewriter.

Maiden of War

Use the Winged Key to exit the Altar and then shoot the next lock to return to the Maiden of War area.

Cross the Maiden of War’s square, go through the open gate, and climb the stairs into the house directly east.

Take a left and open the armoire for some handgun ammo. Check the table for the Leonardo’s Message file — with a hint about how to proceed.

Who would have thought the hole in the stable walls would come in handy …

There’s an easy-to-pick lock here. Continue through the house and grab the wooden animal (head) on your way out.

Unlock the door and head into the back yard. Take a left and check the outhouse for some rusted scrap.

Head to the right and unlock the blue gate — this leads back to the side yard and the Maiden of War. Step into the shed next to the gate and pull the shelves aside to reveal the hole mentioned in the note.

Deal with the lycan, and then continue forward. Turn left at the tractor (with a convenient jack under it), and head up the hill. Take the first right, and head back into the shed with the yellow bucket (way back from when you first slid into town).

The bucket is actually another birdcage. Shoot it down for some shotgun ammo.

Back outside, keep heading up the hill and east to the imposing gate. Shoot the lock to pass through.

Workshop

Turn right for a crate with lei and some rusted scrap a little further in. Head into the shed on the left.

Examine the photograph ahead of you. Flip it over to see a clue:

Look out the window.

Turn around and do that.

If you step close, you’ll line up three pairs of numbers — 07-04-08 — and then get a nasty jump scare. Deal with the lycan, and then turn your attention to the locked cabinet in the corner.

Enter the code we just found — 070408 — and open it for a M1911 handgun and the jack handle.

Move the tractor

Back outside, open the gate and deal with the lycans waiting for you. Use your sniper rifle to take out any you spot on the rooftops.

Continue down the hill and use the jack handle on the tractor’s jack.

On other side, head north. Your goal is to return to the Iron Insignia Key gate to the west. We’ve got a couple stops along the way, though.

As you walk, keep on eye on the rooftops to snipe a few more lycans before they attack you.

At the left, continue past the road and climb through the window into the small, locked shed to grab a pipe bomb. Back outside, continue down the hill.

At the bottom, you’ll meet an armored lycan. Use a pipe bomb to knock his armor off, and then finish him for a perfect crystal skull.

Turn left at the bottom of the hill and shoot the lock on the blue gate.

Luthier’s House

Check the outhouse on the right for a lockpick. Continue into the shed on the right for some gunpowder, handgun ammo, and a Madalina (body).

Between the shed and the house, smash the crate for some lei.

Before you head inside, cross to the northwest corner of the fenced-in area. Look on top of the low woodshed for a Goat of Warding.

Climb the stairs to the house to find a note saying the house key is with “Josef Simon (Beneviento’s Gardener).”

Head back through the gate and across the road to the Iron Insignia Key gate.

Use the Iron Insignia Key to open the gate.

Go through the door to the left of the ladder to find a crate with shotgun ammo. To the right, you’ll find the well wheel (finally).

Climb the ladder and cross the roof to the north to find some metal scrap. Drop off the roof.

Shoot the chickens running around for some poultry to give to Duke later. Check the shed you dropped off for some gunpowder.

Head right (north) and unlock the gate. The front door is locked, so head back to the south. Open the (very fancy) outhouse for a large crystal, and then look for another ladder to climb onto the roof. Drop through the hole to enter the house.

House with a red chimney

You’ll drop into a kitchen. Deal with the lycan around the corner first, and then unlock the front door.

Check the table for the Eugen’s Diary file. Open the box next to it for a note about the Winged Key. Pick up the other piece in the box and rotate it until you get an examine prompt. Combine it with the Winged Key to create the Four-Winged Key.

Continue into the room where the lycan was and open the armoire for some handgun ammo.

Exit the front door and turn right. Shoot the lock to unlock the door into the shed that had a pipe bomb earlier — this is a shortcut back to the east.

Easy-to-pick locks and wells

Before returning to Duke like Ethan suggests, let’s do some backtracking for items and treasures. While you’re wandering, make sure to shoot any animals you see — like pigs and chickens. We’ll be turning those into health increases shortly.

Take a right through that shortcut we just opened and follow the path back to West Old Town and that very first house we entered.

Inside, use the lockpick to get some sniper rifle ammo. Step into the shed on the north side. After you’re done shrieking, shoot the pig for some meat.

Continue out back and use the well wheel to get another lockpick.

Take this back to the weavers house on the eastern edge of the Maiden of War. Use the lockpick to get some shotgun ammo.

Outside, use the well wheel to retrieve the wooden animal (head). Combine that with the wooden animal (body) to make a wooden goat.

Just east of the Maiden of War well, a basement door has been smashed open. Head inside to grab rusted scrap, chem fluid, gunpowder, a teddy bear, and some handgun ammo. Check the oven/fireplace for a Vivianite gem.

Head back to the Church. Use the well wheel to get a Necklace with Two Holes.

Use the Iron Insignia Key to open the gate behind the Church. Take a right and grab the herb.

There’s another Goat of Warding at the south end of this graveyard. Head north to find a crate with lei (and a couple more chickens).

Back at the Church, cut through to the east side of town near Luiza’s House. Use the well wheel again to get a few pipe bombs and shoot the pig out back.

Return to the Altar for another conversation with Duke.

Altar

Sell off everything you can — don’t sell the Necklace with Two Holes or Madalina yet. And do some shopping. You should get enough cash to fully upgrade your new M1911 handgun, so you’re safe to sell off the LEMI at this point.

Duke also offers cooking now. Handing over the ingredients will increase your health permanently. You should have the ingredients for a dish of herbed fish by this point.

Hit the typewriter to save.
