Resident Evil Village House Beneviento music box puzzle solution

Use the winding key and solve the music box puzzle in the creepy doll house

Jeffrey Parkin (he/him) has been writing video game guides for Polygon for almost seven years. He has learned to love just about every genre of game that exists.

Resident Evil Village’s House Beneviento is a series of puzzles in a creepy house full of creepy dolls. We cover all of them in our walkthrough of the “Collect Rose: 1/4” objective, but one — the music box — is trickier than the others.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through solving RE8’s music box puzzle.

Doll Workshop and Doll Woman

Once you reach House Beneviento’s Doll Workshop, you’ll be faced with a Doll Woman. You’ll collect a few things from her like the Silver Key and the Blood Covered Ring that you need to escape the room. More importantly for the music box puzzle, you’ll find the Winding Key hidden in her left leg.

Enter the date — 052911 — from the Wedding Ring into the combination lock on the door. Step through the door. Follow the hall, and the first door on your left will conveniently pop open.

Head to the left, and use the Winding Key on the music box. The front panel will open. If you try to play it, you’ll get this error message:

It won’t play. Something’s not right.

Arrange the cylinders so that the scratches line up. Use the scratches on the left and right to find your starting and ending cylinders, and then arrange the last few like in the image above.

It can be hard to see what you’re doing here, so we’ve zoomed in and highlighted the scratches in the image above. The music box won’t play automatically, so once you have them arranged correctly, hit the prompt to play it.

A drawer will pop open, and you’ll get the tweezers you’ll need for the next puzzle.

The next level of puzzles.
