The Star Wars stand-alone films that Lucasfilm is developing outside of the episodic series will be called Anthology films, Lucasfilm vice president of development Kiri Hart announced at Star Wars Celebration today. The director of the first of those stand-alone films, Gareth Edwards, also brought new footage and story details from the first spin-off movie, which is now officially titled Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One.

While filming hasn't actually started on Rogue One yet, Edwards said, he showed some pre-production footage created by Industrial Light & Magic of a TIE Fighter flying over a jungle planet, with a shot of the Death Star set in the distance.

Lucasfilm also revealed the official plot synopsis for the film:

A rogue band...

This afternoon, as part of the Tribeca Talks Directors series at the Tribeca Film Festival, a geek king sat down with the geek emperor. That is, Stephen Colbert sat down for an hour-long interview with George Lucas. We'll share more highlights of the talk later this evening, but one of the more surprising things Lucas revealed is that he hasn't seen the latest trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens yet. The trailer, revealed yesterday at the opening ceremonies of the Star Wars: Celebration event, rocked the internet community, igniting the long dormant hopes of Star Wars fans.

Lucas told Colbert, "I have seen the first [teaser]. The other one, that came out today, I just saw what was on CBS. But I'm gonna try to look at it. I want to...

During our first look at the new Star Wars Battlefront, we saw something we haven't seen in developer DICE's Battlefield games: women soldiers in the game's multiplayer. On the Rebel side, there was some gender diversity, which isn't exactly new — Princess Leia fought with the Rebels on the forest moon of Endor in Return of the Jedi, and previous Battlefront games have featured women among the Rebel ranks.

But Star Wars Battlefront will also have women Stormtroopers, something we haven't seen much of in the Star Wars universe, certainly not in the films. While Stormtroopers have primarily been men in the Star Wars film franchise — at least, as far as we know — some women have served the Empire in books and other parts of the expanded...

This year's Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California houses an exhibit that features costumes, props and models from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, giving attendees a closer look at the new heroes, new enemies and a couple iconic Star Wars ships.
