Reddit interim CEO Ellen Pao resigned her position today "by mutual agreement," and Reddit founder and previous CEO Steve Huffman is taking the helm, according to an announcement posted on Reddit from board member and president of Y Combinator Sam Altman.

Pao's resignation comes in the wake of recent turmoil for the popular site, after the surprise firing of Reddit's director of communications, Victoria Taylor.

Last week, several Reddit communities, including Reddit Gaming, became private, effectively preventing the public from visiting those areas of the site. Volunteer moderators for hundreds of subReddits cited unhappiness with Reddit management and Taylor's firing. They later reverted to their previous public positions and welcomed...

The chief executive of Reddit has apologized to its community of users for actions that led to an embarrassing revolt which took down some of the social bookmarking site's largest communities, particularly video gaming forums that drive a good deal of the site's traffic.

"We screwed up," Ellen Pao said today. "Not just on July 2 but also over the past several years."

Pao apologized for poor communication with and broken promises to the largely volunteer force of moderators, creating a ferment where Reddit management appeared high-handed and indifferent to the users who create the vast majority of content that make the site so valuable. Indeed, a petition demanding Pao's ouster had gathered 16,000 signatures as of Friday, but already...

About a day after the surprise firing of Reddit's director of communications Victoria Taylor led to mass demonstrations and subreddit blackouts, the popular community-driven site seems to be back on its feet again.

Among the subsites now operational again are the Ask Me Anything sub that started the outages and the Gaming sub.

Reddit's interim CEO Ellen Pao also took to the site to promise changes.

A petition on Change.org seeking the resignation of Reddit Inc. interim CEO Ellen Pao seems to have gathered steam today in the wake of the firing of popular Ask Me Anything coordinator Victoria Taylor.

The petition, which was started three weeks ago, calls for Pao to step down because the
"the Reddit community believes that Pao ... has overstepped her boundaries and fears that she will run Reddit into the ground." While the petition seems chiefly motivated by the high profile gender discrimination case Pao recently lost and a view that Pao is censoring Reddit communities, it appears to have found more fuel with the week's events.

Shortly after news hit Thursday that AMA coordinator Taylor was apparently let go from her job at Reddit,...

Reddit is in turmoil today after apparently letting go Ask Me Anything coordinator Victoria Taylor yesterday afternoon.

In response to that and a long-growing sense of unhappiness with management, volunteer moderators for hundreds of subreddits, including Reddit Gaming, turned their subs private, ostensibly locking out most readers.

It's unclear how or when this will resolve itself, but it looks like this could be a pivotal moment for a site that leans so heavily on an unpaid community.

The best run down of what happened and why can be found over on Reddit section Out of the Loop.

In it moderator Gilgamesh walks visitors through the who, what, when, where, why of the growing turmoil created by the online protest.
