Sea of Thieves guide: Achievements

Deciphering achievements’ rhyming descriptions

Jeffrey Parkin (he/him) has been writing video game guides for Polygon for almost seven years. He has learned to love just about every genre of game that exists.

Sea of Thieves has 60 achievements. Developer Rare published a list of all of them available at launch, but left their descriptions as pirate-y rhymes. Below, we’ll list them all and translate any that need it. We’ve broken them into categories with descriptive names — gameplay, Easter eggs and faction achievements.

  • Now Bring Me That Horizon. “With the capstan raised and the sails unfurled, ‘Now bring me that horizon!’ a pirate yelled.” You’ll get this one the first time you set sail.
  • Full Billow. “When the wind grabs the sails a pirate will hoot, ‘Full billow mateys, we are full speed en route!’” Sail with your sails trimmed correctly and full of wind.
  • Handbrake Turn. “When you find yourself needing a new direction, turn hard and weigh anchor to plot a correction.” Drop the anchor with the ship’s wheel fully turned in either direction.
  • I Wanna Be a Pirate! “Cashing in rewards is always a pleasure, made even better when a number’s the measure.” You’ll get this the first time you earn a level with any faction.
  • Shopping for a Promotion. “Even a pirate wants job recognition, so buy a Promotion to show your position.” Buy your first promotion from a faction (it’ll become available at level 5).
  • I’ll Drink to That. “Nothing says being social, like crews drunk down the local.” Have a drink at an outpost with another crew. (We just don’t know how to convince them not to sink your boat or stab you before you get a chance.)
  • What Shall We Do With a Drunken Sailor? “A tankard or two may make you blue, have a few more and you will surely spew.” Drink until you throw up.
  • #BeMorePirate. “A new peg leg, an eyepatch, a hat and a hook, maketh the pirate to complete the look.” Buy a peg leg, eyepatch, hat and hook from the clothing shop.
  • Aye of Reach. “Head to the Weaponsmith to extend your Reach, please excuse the pun, it was a figure of speech.” Buy a sniper rifle (an eye of reach) from a weaponsmith.

  • You Fight Like a Merchant. “Block an attack as you scream ‘parlay!’, then strike them down to ruin their day.” Block an attack with your cutlass (with the left trigger) and attack your opponent within five seconds.
  • How Appropriate! You Fight Like a Chicken. “When an attack is blocked then fret you may, as being counter-struck will ruin your day.” Have your attack blocked and get attacked within five seconds (the opposite of You Fight Like a Merchant).
  • But You Have Heard of Me? “Halfway to Mastery is an important occasion, mark it with a Promotion to display jubilation.” Buy the level 25 promotion from a faction.

  • In Good Company. “A Trading Company item is great to behold, but upgrade it five times for a beauty untold.”
  • Did Everyone See That?. “Meeting a rival pirate stood on their ship, will become legend if you send them in for a dip.” Knock an opponent off of their own ship with a charged attack.
  • Ignoring the Rules of Engagement. “To shoot from behind is a cowardly act, unless it’s with a blunderbuss as matter of fact.” Shoot an opponent in the back with a blunderbuss.
