How to find all Dark Side power moons
Our power moons guide puts the collectibles in the same order as Super Mario Odyssey.
1. Arrival at Rabbit Ridge
You’ll get this power moon after defeating the Broodals in the multi-floor gauntlet. Check out the video above and the tips below to see how we did it.
- First floor: Don’t worry about throwing Cappy at Topper after the first round. Instead, wait for him to spin his pile of hats around and jump on him when he does that.
- Second floor: Run in a circle around Harriet as she throws her remote bombs. As soon as she throws the ones connected to her pigtails, turn and head toward them and then hit them with Cappy.
- Third floor: Throw Cappy at Spewart as soon as the fight begins, then jump and land on his head. Repeat the process, standing in place or backing up against the edge of the playable area.
- Fourth floor: Wait until the moment when Rango throws his hats and then jump at him. Land on his head a few times, and you’ll win.
- Roof: Capture a Hammer Bro as soon as you begin, and throw hammers at the giant machine’s legs. Waggle your controller as you toss the hammers to throw them faster and end the fight sooner. Avoid Robobrood in the interstitial sections where it pounds the ground with its feet and runs around the arena.
2. Captain Toad on the Dark Side!
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/9729967/2._Captain_Toad_on_the_Dark_Side_.jpg)
Captain Toad is hanging out near the pipe between the fourth floor (Rango) and the roof. Walk past the pipe to find him.
3. Breakdown Road: Hurry and 4. Breakdown Road: Final Challenge!
Here on the Dark Side of the moon, things are difficult. Like this grind of a room, for example. We wish we had a super secret trick to help you through, but the truth is that these power moons are just difficult to get. They rely on your jumping skills, and you won’t have Cappy to help you.
There are some things that will help you, though. Here are our tips:
- Get both moons in one run. The easier moon — 3, the one that appears after you collect the key — still requires you to double back over disappearing terrain. It’s not easy. In fact, it’s hard. You didn’t come this far to get just one power moon, right? Might as well just do two hard things together especially because if you get one, the other is trivial to collect.
- Use the top floor as practice for the bottom floor. There are opportunities on the top floor that will help you hone the skills you need on the bottom floor. Use it as a way to practice your long jumping skills.
Check out the video above to see how it’s done.
5. Invisible Road: Rush! and 6. Invisible Road: Secret!
Over the edge of a cliff on the southeastern side of the central island, you’ll see a blue door and a scarecrow. Throw Cappy at the door to enter a room filled with Piranha Plants, deadly purple goo and two power moons.
To get both moons, you’ll need to navigate across mostly invisible platforms. The good news is that the deadly purple goop that partially covers each platform will show you their boundaries.
Your best bet for getting thorough alive is to jump to the invisible safe areas near each Piranha Plant. You can see how we did that in the gallery above. This strategy ignores the rocks (which are hard to kick anyway) and will get you past the first three enemies without taking a hit.
- 5. Invisible Road: Rush!: You’ll need to make your way across the mostly invisible platforms and destroy the three big Piranha Plants to gain access to this power moon.
- 6. Invisible Road: Secret!: Make your way to the rotating central platform. On the western side of the room (if you’re facing the large Piranha Plants at the far end), there’s an invisible road that leads to a doorway in the wall. Walk across it to get this power moon.
7. Vanishing Road Rush and 8. Vanishing Road Challenge
- Step on the P-Switch and roll through the first section.
- Step on the second P-Switch and triple jump, dive jump and long jump through the next section. This is, far and away, the most difficult part of this room. Watch the GIF in the gallery above to see how we did it.
- To get power moon 8. Vanishing Road Challenge, step on the third P-Switch and turn right to climb the brown destructible platforms. The power moon is at the top.
- To get power moon 7. Vanishing Road Rush, step on the third P-Switch and follow the path through the Sherm tanks. There’s nothing to do but run forward and stay alive.
9. Yoshi Under Siege and 10. Fruit Feast Under Siege
To get these power moons, you’ll need collect all of the fruit. Collect 10, and you’ll get the first moon. Collect 10 more for the second. You can see the locations of each in the video above.
You don’t have to get them all in one going, so don’t sweat it if you die. The fruit you collect carries over.
11. Yoshi on the Sinking Island and 12. Fruit Feast on the Sinking Island
Collect 10 pieces of fruit to get the first power moon. Collect them all them to get both power moons. The location of each is in the gallery above.
Like the previous power moons, you don’t have to get them all in one going, so don’t sweat it if you die. The fruit you collect carries over.
13. Yoshi’s Magma Swamp and 14. Fruit Feast in the Magma Swamp!
Six of the power moons here on the Dark Side require Yoshi to eat fruit. Eat 10 to get the first moon. Eat the remaining 10 to get the second power moon. Press play above to see where they all are and how to get them in this room.
Most of them are right in front of you as you platform through the pink magma. There are five hidden near where you entered. Two are on an island behind the green pillar that holds the door where you entered. (Those are the first we get in the video.) Three more are on top of the green pillar. (Those are the second we get in the video.) Also, out in the magma (to the left side, if you’re facing away from the platform where you entered) you’ll need to do Yoshi’s floating jump to get a piece of fruit hidden above the camera.
