Unmatched, the wildly popular action board game from Restoration Games, will add Geralt of Rivia — the Witcher himself — and five of his closest allies to a slate of fighters already teeming with talent. The game’s roster includes notable fighters from across the pantheon of pop culture, including Bruce Lee and several Marvel characters. The announcement, made Wednesday, pegs the game for a late 2024 release.
“At the risk of sounding cliché, working with Restoration on The Witcher: Unmatched was as refreshing as a salty Skelligan breeze,” said Cian Maher, the franchise and lore designer at CD Projekt Red, in a news release. “The team put great care and attention to detail into not only representing the lore of The Witcher, but actively ensuring each set was simultaneously accurate and innovative, ambitious and inundated by intrigue.”
The partnership will include two products, titled The Witcher: Unmatched - Steel and Silver and The Witcher: Unmatched - Realms Fall. Each will include three playable characters and two battlefields. No specific characters were announced aside from Geralt.
Launched at Gen Con in 2019, Unmatched was originally a joint venture between Restoration Games, best known for its efforts to breathe life into older tabletop franchises like Dark Tower and Fireball Island, and Mondo, best known for its art house film posters. The heady combination of world-class graphic design and solid miniatures skirmish gameplay (inspired by other games, including Milton Bradley’s Star Wars: Epic Duels as well as Fantasy Flight’s Tannhauser) has become an international hit, with a dedicated cadre of fans duking it out around the world and online. But high-profile releases stalled somewhat following a burst of new additions from Marvel’s pantheon of heroes, including Deadpool. Bullseye, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel.
The franchise also boasts a bevy of more mythical figures, including Achilles, Beowulf, and King Arthur. Also slated for release in 2024 are Rosie The Riveter and William Shakespeare, designs that were the product of a fan contest that the company ran several years ago.
