In Polygon’s The Last of Us Part 2 Training Manual guide, we’ll show you the location of every Training Manual in the game. These books and magazines unlock Upgrade Branches that act as skill trees and unlock new abilities. Each new ability costs Supplements — those pills and capsules you find scattered around the world (often near bathroom sinks).

A note on pre-orders

If you pre-ordered The Last of Us Part 2, you will have the option to Apply Preorder Bonus when you start a new game (or select a new chapter). This adds a little ammo capacity to Ellie’s gun and gives you the Crafting Training Manual from the beginning of the game.

To be clear: You don’t have to find it because you already have it. And that changes the game in more than one way.

Based on our research, it seems like the next Training Manual you find as Ellie will be the Stealth Training Manual in the Downtown section of Seattle Day 1. When you reach the Capitol Hill section of Seattle Day 1, you won’t find a manual in the location we describe below — because you already have it.

Pre-order and regular games line up starting with the third Training Manual, Precision, in the Hillcrest section of Seattle Day 2.

Crafting Training Manual location

Chapter: Seattle Day 1 (Ellie) - Downtown

Based on our research, there are two locations where you might find the Crafting Training Manual (if you didn’t get it as a pre-order bonus). We found it in the courthouse (location 1, below), but other outlets say it can be found at the overpass (location 2). We’ve included both locations here.

Location 1: Courthouse

The Last of Us Part 2 crafting training manual location courthouse — The **Crafting Training Manual** is on a shelf in the lower floor of the courthouse.

Enter the courthouse at the intersection of 6th Ave. and Madison St. Inside and downstairs, you’ll smash through a room to find a few collectibles and a Safe. Check the bookshelf in the room with the safe to find a book — PREP: A Survival Guide for the Silent Majority by Todd Garrett. That’s the Crafting Training Manual, and it unlocks a new upgrade branch: Crafting. The first thing you can unlock is Craft Melee Upgrades for 20 Supplements.

Location 2: Overpass

The Last of Us Part 2 crafting training manual location overpass — You might also find the **Crafting Training Manual** after you repel down the broken overpass.

In the northeast of the Downtown area — to the northeast of the intersection at 6th Avenue and Marion Street — there’s a broken overpass. Ride out onto the over part of the overpass with a sideways truck. Climb on top, and jump across to the (also broken) bridge with a firetruck at the end. You’ll find a rope along the right side of the firetruck. Toss it off the edge and climb down. Below, swing over to another section of road with an overturned truck. You’ll find the Crafting Training Manual inside (along with some supplies).

Stealth Training Manual location

Chapter: Seattle Day 1 (Ellie) - Capitol Hill

When you escape the elementary school, you’ll head through the Capitol Hill region of Seattle. After a little exploring and some shooting, you’ll come to a gas station (with a Workbench) where you’ll run into more Wolves and a few infected.

The Last of Us Part 2 Seattle Day 1 (Ellie) Capitol Hill Stealth Training Manual location — The Stealth Training Manual is in a bookstore coffee shop across the street from the gas station.

Across the street from the gas station, there’s a bookstore and attached coffee shop. The Stealth Training Manual — Last Round: The Survivalist Magazine — is next to a typewriter near the (boarded over) front windows.

If you have the pre-order bonus turned on, this location will be empty.

Precision Training Manual location

Chapter: Seattle Day 2 (Ellie) - Hillcrest

While making your way toward Tommy through the Hillcrest neighborhood, you’ll pass through a bike shop with a Workbench. Out front, cross the street to the Goldstar Liquor shop (it’s right by the hummer with “Come get me assholes” painted on it).

Turn left at the checkout counter, and drop into the basement. Take out the shamblers, loot the basement, and you’ll make your way to a staircase. The stairs will lead you up to a daycare(?) on the second floor.

The Precision Training Manual — an Outdoor Sportsman magazine — is on the floor by the counter. It unlocks the Precision training branch. The first ability to unlock is Aim Stability Increase for 30 Supplements.

Explosives Training Manual location

Chapter: Seattle Day 2 (Ellie) - The Seraphites

As you work your way through The Seraphites section of Seattle Day 2, you’ll come to an apartment building. There are some collectibles, a Safe, and a Workbench. When you reach the Workbench, find that apartment’s bedroom. On the bed, you’ll find an Organic Chemistry: Concepts & Practice textbook, which is the the Explosive Training Manual.

For 20 Supplements, you can craft explosive arrows when you unlock this manual’s first ability.

Covert Ops Training Manual location

Chapter: Seattle Day 1 – On Foot

Playing as Abby, you’ll make your way and into a warehouse with a sailboat inside. After you try (and kind of fail) to open the sliding door, you’ll gain access to a door on the second floor. Head through the room beyond the door, and you’ll find a ladder that you can use to reach the Ohio Quarter Coin. Instead of climbing, use the ladder to create a bridge over to the boat.

You’ll find the Covert Ops Training Manual — a book titled David Vesus Goliath — along with some supplies in the boat’s cabin. The Covert Ops Training branch starts with the ability to craft shivs for 20 Supplements.

Close Quarters Training Manual location

Chapter: Seattle Day 1 – Hostile Territory

Based on other guides and videos, this Training Manual seems to appear in two locations (like the Stealth Training Manual above).

Location 1: Apartment near Tang Fabrics

Early in this section, you’ll approach a building with a Tang Fabrics & Imports sign painted on the wall. Before you take the stairs down and inside, look for a nearby apartment you can climb into. This is where you’ll find the Scar’s Suicide Note Artifact. The Urban Warrior: Close-Quarters Combat Training for Civilians handbook — the Close Quarters Training Manual — will be on the kitchen counter.

Location 2: Jasmine Bakery Safe

As Abby continues her way toward the aquarium, you’ll come to a few stores and restaurants. To get this Training Manual, you’ll need to open the Safe inside Jasmine Bakery.

You’ll find the combination for the Safe is on the Jasmine Bakery Safe note in the Ruby Dragon restaurant nearby (hint: it’s 68-96-89). The Close Quarters Training Manual is inside.

Firearms Training Manual location

Chapter: Seattle Day 1 – The Forest

As Abby moves through the titular forest in this section, she’ll come to an auto shop. When you open the garage door to get inside, you’ll find this section’s only Workbench and Artifact.

Head to the garage’s front office to find the Firearms Training Manual (Bring Your Own Bullets: How to Make Your Own Improvised Munitions with Everyday Household Items) on a filing cabinet there. The first ability in this branch teaches Abby to craft incendiary shells for 20 Supplements.

Ordnance Training Manual location

Chapter: Seattle Day 1 – The Coast

The last Training Manual is in the final section of Abby’s Seattle Day 1. As you make your way down the coast and does a little swimming, you’ll come to a beached ferry.

You’ll need to climb to the top of the ferry. On the second floor (deck?), you’ll find the Mutiny Note Artifact that contains a combination for a nearby safe. Up on the sun deck, take an immediate left at the top of the stairs. Enter the combination to the safe — 90-77-01 — and open it to find Improvised Weapons and Terrorist Tactics: A Field Guide. This Ordnance Training Manual unlocks a branch that starts with faster crafting for 20 Supplements.
