The Surge guide: Firebug boss fight

How to beat The Surge’s second boss.

Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

The Surge’s Firebug is one of the game’s tougher fights. After passing all of the toxic waste in area two, you will find a big room. Enter it and get ready for a fight. Time to kill the pesky robot that you have been following since the beginning of the game.

The boss will start out by hovering slightly above the ground. It will use its six separate arms as weapons. More likely than not, the Firebug will start the fight by spinning and slowly floating toward you. Dodge away until it stops.

Once you have an opening, lock onto a limb and strike it. Back out as quickly as you can and put some distance between you and the boss. Be careful not to get too greedy. Continue attacking the same arm until it collapses. The lock on will switch to the joint now. Attack it until it breaks.

Repeat this process until the Firebug only has three limbs left.

Once three limbs have been removed, the Firebug will fly high into the air and situate itself. Things will go far faster now and the boss will start charging at you from across the room. This charge is lethal for lower armor types, so be sure to doge it.

From here on out, use vertical strikes when attacking the boss. The remaining arms are working to protect the central brain underneath the robot. Dodge the Firebug’s attacks and remove the limbs like you did before. Attack the central brain as much as possible without getting too greedy.

Over the course of the fight, the Firebug will attempt to smash you with its arms and body. Its flame jets are also very dangerous. The boss will coat an area in flames or shoot a stream in your direction. Avoid the fire at all costs by either staying away from the boss or standing directly on top of it.

Once you have destroyed the brain, the Firebug will be no more.
