Quarry walkthrough and solutions

Tetris, anyone?

Just like there's more than one way to solve some puzzles in The Witness, there's more than one way to use this guide.

We begin with a series of hints designed to gently nudge you toward solutions. If you're looking for a complete walkthrough with solutions, those appear next, at a safe distance for those who wish to avoid spoilers. Because they often require you to solve the area's puzzles first, we end with a guide to finding collectibles. Whatever your choice, you can jump directly to each section using the table of contents below.

The puzzles in Quarry aren't for beginners. If you're trying to wrap your mind around them and you're having difficulty, that's not a failure on your part. The Witness is tough here.

Given that you've (hopefully) spent hours exploring the island and getting solving puzzles, then it won't be a spoiler to remind you that there is sometimes more than one solution to a puzzle. That is true in the Quarry to a whole different degree.

Keep an eye out for new symbols. They usually debut on simple puzzles. If you pay attention to the unique properties of the simpler puzzles, that should help you when things get more complex.

Pay close attention to the shape of the mazes and the world around the puzzles. Combined, they can convey meaning beyond the board.

Be sure to check out our beginner's guide for more general tips for the discerning island survivalist.

Walkthrough and solutions

There are a few different ways to wander into the Quarry, but we'd suggest the path from the bridge, which is north of Hub Village and the Monastery, east of the Desert Temple and west of the Keep.

Here on the bridge, you'll be introduced to Tetris-like puzzles. They follow the same basic format as the other maze puzzles, but they require the solution to include the tetromino shapes that are displayed on the board.

Because this is The Witness, it's safe to go ahead and assume that it's not that straightforward, though. Sometimes the shapes will fit together as if you were playing Tetris. Sometimes, not so much.

The bridge also marks the return of the black and white puzzles that you learned about in and around the Castle.

Once you've arrived in the Quarry, you'll notice its most distinguishing feature: a large building buttressing the rock cliff. There's only one way in, and two puzzles hang on the door separating you from the puzzles and statues inside.

There are two smaller doors you can open from inside the building. Both have switches that will swing them open. One door leads to the outside, to the path you crossed to get to this building's entrance. Another leads to a rock staircase. Follow that up, and you'll have access to the building's roof, a yellow box that houses a laser beam and the area's final puzzle and a large (initially unpowered) elevator.

Puzzles with the three-tipped elimination icon denote multiple solutions. This first puzzle is actually a control panel for the adjacent ramp. It's also shaped like the object it controls, which is something you should keep in mind.

Elimination series 1

You can eliminate one dot, as long as it's in the same area as the elimination (or as I like to think of it, the flux capacitor) symbol. Solving these puzzles lights a control panel. Follow the lit white wire to find it.

Lift control panel

There are three possible solutions to this puzzle, and where you draw your horizontal line determines where the small lift next to the control panel will raise. While standing at ground level, solve the puzzle so that the horizontal line is at its lowest level. Walk onto the ramp that lowers, turn around, enter puzzle solving mode and then solve the control panel puzzle to raise the lift to its highest level. When you're up there, follow the path around through the control room to the next series of puzzles.

Elimination series 2

These puzzles put much of what you've learned into practice, including color segregation. If you get stuck, remember that the eliminated piece blinks.

Control room

There are two puzzles here, and solving them lights two wires to the outside. One powers the elevator outside. The other opens the left panel on the box at the top of the Quarry. After you've completed the sequence of puzzles inside the Quarry building's control room, you'll unlock the elevator and the left side of the panel for the final, laser-equipped puzzle in the area.

Solve one puzzle to lower the staircase and make your way outside again.

You need to solve the puzzles inside the building to bring power to the elevator. After doing so, make your way up the stone staircase, which you can access from a door inside the Quarry building. Walk toward the ocean, taking the path around the rock formation until you reach the elevator. The controls you'll find there work just like those you used to control small elevator inside the building.

You can use the elevator as a quick path through the Quarry to the Desert Temple and Symmetry Island. You can also solve an environmental puzzle on your way down.

The left side door of the Quarry's final puzzle opens after you solve the series of puzzles inside the building. To unlock the door on the right, you'll need to solve the series of puzzles in the Logging facility across the river from the Quarry.

Once you've done both, you can access the puzzle's solution, which uses much of what the puzzles in the surrounding area taught you.

In The Witness, the island and its structures can be puzzles, too. They aren't as explicit or obvious as the puzzle boards strewn about (which is a nice way of saying that they're easy to miss). You have to look for them, given that environmental puzzles often appear in unlikely places. The good news: If you know what to look for, they're fairly easy to find. They telegraph their presence with the same ball-and-path design as the game's ubiquitous puzzle boards.

Stand on the roof looking in the direction of the waterfall and look down to find another environmental puzzle. This one shoots white light at a nearby obelisk, which sits on the border between the Quarry and the Shady Trees. Take the cross the bridge over the waterfall, and it'll be right there.

The second environmental puzzle appears when you look at the Quarry's train tracks from the point of view of the elevator as it descends. Its white energy also lights up the obelisk in the Shady Trees.

You can also find two more environmental puzzles in the building — in fact, two in one. Ascend the staircase you head to the control panel room. There, you'll find two puzzle controls, one for the ramp and another for the lift.

Raise the lift, head back toward the stairs and stop when the light shining in through the window makes the center look like a completed circle of white light. Enter puzzle solving mode and trace your path left, down the ramp.

Head back into the control room and send the lift to the ground level. Then send it to its highest level. While it slowly makes it way up, head back to the position where you can see a circle of white light. Enter puzzle solving mode and trace your path right. When the left hits its center level, you'll be able to continue sliding right. When it hits its top level, you continue sliding again.

Both environmental puzzles activate ruins on the obelisk just over the bridge in the Shady Trees.

There's one seemingly random puzzle in the Quarry, and it sits atop the area's large building. Astute observers will note that its design — including a small orange triangle — bears a remarkable resemblance to a puzzle in the Castle.
