A Series of Unfortunate Events trailer debuts with best look at Count Olaf yet

It’s pretty whimsical

After months of teaser trailers and featurettes, the first official trailer for Netflix’s adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events has arrived.

Unlike in previous videos, the newest trailer is the best look at the whimsical — if not slightly depressing and grim — world that the Baudelaire orphans are left to contend with following their parents’ death. The trailer lightly touches upon some of the more memorable parts of Snicket’s 13-book series, including the steampunk contraptions that the children come up with to get out of sticky situations, and the all-important secret code that they must decrypt to figure out what led to their parents’ death.

The trailer also gives us a better look at the nefarious Count Olaf, played by Neil Patrick Harris, who was briefly introduced a couple of weeks ago in a spotlight video on the character. In the series, Olaf, who’s after the family fortune, is a constant nemesis whom the Baudelaire children try to escape from as they move from city to city.

A Series of Unfortunate Events, which stars Malina Weissman as Violet Baudelaire, Louis Hynes as Klaus Baudelaire and Patrick Warburton as the narrator Lemony Snicket, premieres on Netflix on Jan. 13, 2017.
