That suit seems tough to move around in

Amazon Studios’ reboot of The Tick is coming to Amazon Video next month, along with two other comedy pilots, and our first glimpse of Peter Serafinowicz’s take on the character is, well, interesting.

The new Tick will be a live-action show, just like the short-lived Fox series from 2001. Both shows, as well as the 1994 animated series, are based on the comic book character created by Ben Edlund in 1986. Edlund is an executive producer on the Amazon revival, along with Barry Josephson and Barry Sonnenfeld; all three were executive producers on the original show 15 years ago.

Here’s the synopsis of The Tick from Amazon:

In a world where superheroes have been real for decades, an underdog accountant with zero powers comes to realize his city is owned by a global super villain long-thought dead. As he struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero.

Along with Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), The Tick stars Griffin Newman (Vinyl) as the aforementioned accountant, Arthur; Jackie Earle Haley (Preacher) as the supervillain known as The Terror; and Valorie Curry (House of Lies) as Arthur’s sister Dot. Edlund is also the writer on The Tick, and Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister (Inception) is the director.

Amazon released an image of Serafinowicz in costume as The Tick today; you can check it out below. Edlund previously said the reboot will be "darker and more grounded" than the 2001 series, and apparently, even The Tick’s superhero outfit is more gritty — note its scabrous texture, which is the opposite of the smooth vinyl suit that Patrick Warburton wore back in the day.

The Tick’s half-hour pilot will go live Aug. 19, along with the debuts of two other comedies: I Love Dick, which comes from Transparent executive producer Jill Soloway, and Jean-Claude Van Johnson, which counts Jean-Claude Van Damme (Street Fighter), Peter Atencio (Key & Peele) and Ridley Scott (The Martian) as executive producers.

Here’s more info on those series from Amazon:

Adapted from the cult classic I Love Dick—referred to as "the most important book about men and women written in the last century" (Emily Gould, The Guardian)—is set in a colorful intellectual community in Marfa, Texas. Chris (Kathryn Hahn, Transparent) and Sylvere (Griffin Dunne, Dallas Buyers Club), arrive in Marfa when Sylvere is offered a fellowship to finish a book he's been writing on the Holocaust. When they meet Dick (Kevin Bacon, The Following), he taunts their imaginations and upends their preconceptions about love and monogamy. An exploration of the female gaze and how we tell stories about love and desire, I Love Dick charts the evolution of a marriage, the awakening of an artist and the deification of a writer named Dick.

If you need to eliminate a political rival, debilitate a multinational corporation, or overthrow an entire government—and you need it done with the utmost secrecy—there’s only one person to turn to: one of the most internationally recognizable movie stars in the history of film. Jean-Claude Van Johnson stars Jean-Claude Van Damme (JCVD) playing "Jean-Claude Van Johnson," a global martial arts and film sensation…and, operating under the simple alias of "Johnson," the most dangerous undercover private contractor in the world. Lucky for the world’s bad guys, he’s been retired for years…unlucky for them, a chance encounter with a lost love is about to bring him back to the game…and this time, he’ll be deadlier than ever. Probably.

All three pilots will be available to Amazon Video subscribers in the U.S., the U.K., Germany, Austria and Japan. As usual, Amazon is asking viewers to rate the pilots; the ones that receive the best feedback will get orders for full seasons.
