After much demand, a crossover event between AMC’s The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead is in the works, creator Robert Kirkman confirmed today.
Kirkman didn’t give many details about the event, but noted that one character from either The Walking Dead or Fear the Walking Dead will appear on the other show for one episode. Kirkman confirmed this will be a major event in the Walking Dead universe, but wouldn’t elaborate on which show will be impacted most. He promised that more details will be coming within the next few weeks.
In 2016, Fear the Walking Dead executive producer Dave Erickson told TVLine that it wasn’t possible to stage a crossover because the spinoff, unlike The Walking Dead, was not based on Kirkman’s original comic.
“As interesting as the ways that [TWD showrunner] Scott [M. Gimple] & Co. are able to shift the comic book narrative and really explore that, there is no Fear TWD” in the universe of The Walking Dead, Erickson said at the time. He added that “some tectonic plates would have to shift to make [a crossover] happen.”
It appears those plates have indeed shifted, now that a crossover is in the works. Kirkman didn’t say if it would occur in the upcoming eighth season of The Walking Dead, which premieres on Oct. 22 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
