Carmen Sandiego is returning as an animated children’s show on Netflix

It’ll star Gina Rodriguez

Netflix

We finally know where in the world Carmen Sandiego is: on Netflix.

Netflix announced today it was moving ahead with a new, animated series based on the educational computer games released by Brøderbund Software in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The games, which focused on an organization called ACME Detective Agency, created with the purpose of stopping international thief Carmen Sandiego from committing crimes around the world, were later adapted into a series of books and three television series, which aired between 1991 and 1998.

Unlike the many games, books and previous series, Netflix’s new iteration will dig into the origin story of Carmen Sandiego, who will be voiced by Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez. The series will not only examine how Carmen Sandiego became the international criminal she’s known as today, but also explore why she decided to become a thief in the first place.

The first season will consist of 20, 22-minute episodes, according to the streaming service. Carmen Sandiego, which is being targeted toward children, will premiere in 2019.
