American Gods is going to try very hard to not run into a major Game of Thrones issue

American Gods is gearing up for its debut at the end of the month, but one of the questions fans have for author Neil Gaiman is whether or not the series will ruin anything from a potential sequel to his book.

It’s a question that has become far more prevalent in the age of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, where the show has the potential to spoil future storylines for readers. George R.R. Martin, the author whose books the series is based on, received flack from fans of the books when he announced the HBO show would introduce events that haven’t happened yet. Martin said there was no way around it and confessed he had given showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss the ending to his own series so they could finish the show without having to wait for him to write the last couple of books.

Gaiman is aware of the issue and told Entertainment Weekly that while a sequel to American Gods is a ways off, he’s worked closely with showrunner Bryan Fuller to ensure nothing that he had planned was ruined.

“There were moments, which they were very good about listening to, when I would say, ‘Okay, nobody but you two knows anything at all about the plot of American Gods 2, but I need to tell you that this line, which seems like a bit of dialogue that you could lose, will become important,” Gaiman said. “Or this little scene — an indigenous scene — which seems trivial will become important one day and if we get to season five, we’ll need it then, so let’s put it here now.”

In terms of when fans of the 2001 novel may actually get to read a sequel, Gaiman has a similar answer to Martin — but the simple answer is that he’s only one man.

“The big problem I have is having a maximum of one body and one set of typing fingers at any time,” Gaiman said.

The author added that he has a few more projects on the docket, including a couple of children’s books he wants to write, but once those are done he’ll continue working on American Gods 2.
