Marvel and Netflix have released the first teaser for The Defenders and based on a not-so-subtle hint, it looks like the TV event of the year will premiere in August.
The teaser, which can be seen above and runs for 16 seconds, has the four superheroes standing together in an elevator. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and the most recent addition, Iron Fist, aren’t doing anything in the elevator, but when Jones realizes there’s a camera in one of the corners, she proceeds to cut the feed.
The time that appears at the end of the teaser, which becomes frozen after Jones hits the camera, seems to suggest that The Defenders will premiere on August 18, 2017. Marvel and Netflix previously confirmed that the show would debut this year, but with The Punisher also set to premiere, the question was where The Defenders would fall on the slate.
If you’re paying close attention, you might also notice that IP address in the upper left hand corner of the video. If you take the bite and follow the trail of breadcrumbs Marvel and Netflix have left behind, it leads to a website called the New York Bulletin, which appears to be a daily newspaper about the characters in the shared universe.
At the bottom of that page, a disclaimer confirms that The Defenders will premiere on August 18.
The Defenders will see the four superheroes team up to deal with the Hand, a group of assassins controlled by Madame Gao. A new villain, played by Alien’s Sigourney Weaver, will also make her debut in Marvel and Netflix’s TV universe.
Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Daredevil are available to stream now.
Update: A website created for The Defenders confirms that the show will debut on Aug. 18. Changes have been made throughout the story to reflect this new information.
