Netflix is teaming up with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to produce a prequel to Jim Henson’s weirdly macabre 1982 movie about alien puppets, The Dark Crystal.
Netflix announced today that it was working on 10-episode prequel series, called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which takes place many years before the events of the original film. Brian Froud, the original film’s conceptual designer, will partner with Netflix and the new showrunner to ensure the series has the same spirit as the movie. A teaser for the series can be seen above.
In the original Dark Crystal, an alien elf known as a Gelfling embarks on a quest to find the last remaining shard for a mythic crystal and return order to his planet of Thra. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will use similar themes and storylines, but will follow the lives of three different Gelflings trying to save Thra from the evil Skeksis. In The Dark Crystal, the Skeksis were a malevolent race who used the power of the dark crystal to replenish their source of power.
Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) will act as showrunner on the series, but there aren’t any actors attached to the project yet. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will start shooting this fall.
