One of Marvel’s more popular characters is returning for The Defenders on Netflix, but with a bit of a twist.
[Warning: The following contains spoilers for details surrounding The Defenders. If you’re attempting to go in knowing as little about the series as possible, you may want to stop reading now.]
A new, 15-second teaser for The Defenders is a bit of a callback to an earlier moment in Marvel and Netflix’s shared universe that diehard fans may appreciate. At the end of Daredevil’s second season, the body of Matt Murdock’s only love, Elektra, could be seen being placed into a chamber by members of the underground assassin organization, The Hand. The teaser essentially picks up from that moment and, as you can see in the video below, Elektra isn’t entirely gone from Marvel’s TV universe just yet.

There are still a number of questions surrounding Elektra’s return. The biggest, of course, being whether or not she’s returning to the franchise as a friend or foe. Will she join Murdock and the rest of the Defenders on their path to defeat The Hand or will she fight against them?
All that we know for sure is that Sigourney Weaver is joining the franchise as a new villain, but how her role fits into the universe is also up in the air at this time.
The Defenders will debut on Netflix on Aug. 18.
