Castlevania teaser: Vengeance

Netflix released the first teaser for its upcoming animated series based on Konami’s Castlevania franchise, and revealed the show’s release date: July 7.

The teaser takes a little while to get going, as it kicks off with a bit of nostalgia. A custom Castlevania cartridge is inserted into a Nintendo Entertainment System, firing up some old-school Netflix streaming software. When the animation starts, we get a look at what appears to be one of the Belmonts whipping his way through Dracula’s castle — and possibly encountering Alucard along the way.

The official description of the series on Netflix says Castlevania will focus on “the last surviving member of a disgraced clan [who] fights to save Eastern Europe from Dracula.”

Netflix announced Castlevania earlier this year. The series is being written by Warren Ellis and produced by Adi Shankar (Dredd, The Grey), Frederator, Powerhouse Animation and Netflix.

Shankar has described the Castlevania animated series as super violent and hopes the show will “set the bar” for video game adaptations. Ellis has been working to bring Castlevania to life for more than a decade. The comic book writer and novelist announced in 2006 that he was working on Dracula's Curse, an animated feature in development at a different production company.
