Marvel Animation has a new Spider-Man and, if you play games or grew up watching anime in the ‘90s, you’ll probably recognize the voice immediately.
Robbie Daymond isn’t a household name, but he’s appeared in numerous cartoon series and video games. He’s perhaps best known for his work as Tuxedo Mask in the Sailor Moon series that ran from 1995 to 2000, but since then has landed his voice talents to other projects — like voicing Prompto in the English version of Final Fantasy 15.
Now, Daymond will voice the new Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man. In the new series, Parker is a new student at Horizon High School, a special facility for gifted students, struggling to fit in with classmates and maintain his secret superhero lifestyle. One of the biggest challenges he has to contend with, however, is keeping the peace with his best friend and competing genius, Harry Osborne. Miles Morales, the current version of Spider-Man in Marvel’s Spider-Man series, will also be included in the show. Nadji Jeter, the actor who voiced Sam in Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, will voice Morales.
In Marvel’s Spider-Man, Parker will have to ensure that he keeps the people of New York safe from villains like Vulture, Lizard, Doctor Octopus and Sandman, while keeping an eye on Osborne. Much like the comics and original Spider-Man live-action movies, Osborne will be drawn to the darker side of the law, pulled in by the immense power being offered to him by nefarious individuals, putting Parker in a conundrum over how to help his best friend and save the city from destruction. Since it’s an origin story of sorts, Uncle Ben will be a part of the series. Uncle Ben will be voiced by Patton Oswalt.
Cort Lane, senior vice president of Marvel Animation, and Joe Quesada, Marvel's chief creative officer, made the announcement at Disney’s D23 convention during the studio’s panel for its upcoming animation block. Lane and Quesada also confirmed a third season of its Guardians of the Galaxy animated series and announced a new Guardians of the Galaxy show is being made in partnership with The Lego Group.
Marvel’s Spider-Man will debut on Aug. 19 at 7 a.m. ET on Disney XD. The series premiere will run for an hour, with subsequent episodes scheduled to run for 30 minutes.
