The premiere of the seventh season of Game of Thrones is tonight. In advance of that, HBO put out this official recap of everything that's gone down in seasons 1 through 6. As it's been more than a year since the season 6 finale, a refresher course might be useful.
It goes without saying this whole video should be considered a spoiler. So, don't watch it unless you are current with everything, or have been faking your familiarity just to maintain social relevance with your friends, and suddenly you've been invited to a viewing party.
I will say this, having seen none of Game of Thrones but reading a ton about it here: I don't feel like this spoils much. There's no narrator saying, "And then this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened ...." The recap is more a collection of scenes to jog the memories of those familiar with the series.
Of course, it's also an ad for HBO Now, where every episode of the first six seasons can be found. Then again, that too is probably preaching to the masses, because those familiar with Game of Thrones are probably watching it somewhere and paying for it already.
Anyhow, Game of Thrones kicks off the seventh season Sunday, July 16 at 9 p.m. ET. It will feature just seven episodes, and later wrap up with a six-episode season 8. Season 7 was delayed past its traditional April premiere date because the filming schedule needed to include "some grim, grey weather," according to the showrunners.
