If the latest teaser for Netflix’s Marvel universe is anything to go by, the company doesn’t want you to forget about its newest anti-hero, the Punisher.
The network released a new video highlighting its small-screen Marvel universe, which was published on the official Luke Cage Twitter account, that puts a spotlight on Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Daredevil and Cage. It’s the face at the very end, however, that sticks out the most. Actor Jon Bernthal appears, wielding a gun, face dirty and sporting the iconic Punisher symbol on his chest. Bernthal played Punisher previously in the second season of Daredevil.
Although The Punisher isn’t scheduled to premiere until November, it’s clear that’s who Marvel and Netflix are going to focus on during San Diego Comic-Con. With a panel dedicated to The Defenders, Netflix’s next big superhero saga, there’s a very good chance we’ll get our first look at the character in action post-Daredevil’s second season.
Bernthal’s Punisher played a big role in Daredevil’s second season. Following the season’s release last year, Netflix confirmed it was working on a stand-alone Punisher series, which would be released in 2017. Based on the timeline that’s been given by those working on the show, Daredevil will either be the last or one of the last Marvel shows Netflix puts out this year.
The promo for Netflix’s Marvel universe also includes narration from Stan Lee. As Jones, Cage, Daredevil and Iron Fist fight their way through New York City, Lee gives a speech about the necessity of superheroes and, more importantly, complicated human beings.
“Heroes show us we don’t need to be perfect to do what’s right,” Lee says at one point. “It’s not about living without fear, but facing injustice.”
The Defenders will debut on Aug. 18.
