After five years of anticipation, the first footage for the third season of Young Justice has finally dropped. Following the show’s cancellation in 2013, fans have campaigned passionately for a third season. The show was pulled before major plot arcs were resolved — and after the death of a fan-favorite character and the revelation of the real Big Bad.
Season three was announced in 2016 and is titled Young Justice: Outsiders. Joining the heroes from the first two seasons are some new characters, including Stephanie Brown’s Spoiler, Cissie King-Jones’ Arrowette, Forager and Thirteen. Outsiders will take place years after the events of season two and the plot will focus metahuman trafficking.
The footage starts with a recap of the first two seasons, before skipping ahead to the new stuff. Artemis glances at a picture of Wally, a moment of quiet grieving before the action really starts. The threat of metahuman trafficking is discussed in the country of Markovia, as members of the original team — Artemis, Nightwing, Superboy and Aqualad — put together a covert ops group to bust a trafficking ring. Action follows, with plenty of new characters joining the old cast.
Creators Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood, Jackie Chan Adventures) and Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, Star Wars Rebels) are returning to the series. Both had expressed interest in a season three after the show’s cancellation, and now that it’s finally coming, they’re hinting at more.
“We have a bunch more stories we want to tell,” Weisman said in the Comic-Con edition of TV Guide. “So we hope we get a fourth season.”
Young Justice: Outsiders will be available on DC’s streaming platform, DC Universe, in 2019.
