Rejoice, for the first real teaser for The Righteous Gemstones is here! If you’re anything like me, you’ve been painstakingly combing through the HBO hype reels before every episode of Game of Thrones in search of a glimpse of Danny McBride’s new show. From the looks of the teaser, we’re in store for one heck of an ending to the “misunderstood angry man trilogy” that began with the masterpiece Eastbound & Down.
Vice Principals upped the ante from Eastbound & Down by adding a distinctly cinematic flair to the proceedings (McBride cited Brian De Palma as an influence on the show). Now The Righteous Gemstones is taking things even further. The teaser for the series, which stars McBride, Adam Devine, John Goodman, and Edi Patterson as members of the world-famous televangelist Gemstone family, features surprisingly grandiose set pieces as the family travels across the globe. It also has the snappy quality expected of the McBride-Jody Hill-David Gordon Green dream team.
McBride plays Jesse Gemstone, son of Eli Gemstone (Goodman), who aims to take the empire his father has built and update the ministry for a modern audience.
The series’ cast also boasts Walton Goggins (who starred in Vice Principals) as Baby Billy Freeman, “a former child star who clogged and sang for Jesus,” Tony Cavalero as an ex-Satanist, and Dermot Mulroney with the strangest slicked-back hair I’ve ever seen.
