SpongeBob is off to sleepaway camp in a new spinoff series

The beginning of the Spongebob Squarepants expanded universe?

SpongeBob’s underwater universe is getting a little bigger with Kamp Koral (working title), an upcoming spinoff series that throws back to SpongeBob’s pre-teen years. The series is set to begin production this June just before the original series’ 20th anniversary in July.

Kamp Koral follows ten-year-old SpongeBob and his friends getting up to typical summer camp shenanigans like building underwater campfires, going jellyfishing, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the “craziest camp in the kelp forest.” We can only hope that Kamp Koral will answer critical questions in the SpongeBob Squarepants universe like where SpongeBob learned “The Campfire Song Song” or how to protect himself from Sea Bears.

Unlike the original 2D SpongeBob series, Kamp Koral will be CG-animated like the latest SpongeBob feature film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. The series is confirmed for at least 13 episodes and will be co-executive produced by SpongeBob’s Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller. While it is the first SpongeBob spinoff, it won’t be the last — Deadline reported earlier this year that Nickelodeon is planning further SpongeBob spinoffs focusing on the series’ main characters.
