Report: Game of Thrones prequel focused on Targaryens taking flight at HBO

The series would lift from Fire & Blood

A second Game of Thrones prequel is close to receiving an order for a pilot episode, according to anonymous sources speaking with The Hollywood Reporter. The prequel would take place 300 years prior to the long-running high-fantasy series and focus on House Targaryen, lifting from Fire & Blood, which dives into the history of the Targaryen dynasty. Deadline further reports that the prequel would come from author George R.R. Martin and Colony co-creator/exec producer Ryan Condal.

News of HBO further exploring the world of Westeros does not come as a surprise. Martin wrote on his blog in May that the network was actively pursuing at least three spin-offs.

“We have had five different Game of Thrones successor shows in development at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely,” he wrote. In the same blog post, Martin hinted that fans should pick up their copies of Fire & Blood.

The first of these is a prequel that has been public knowledge for some time. Written by Jane Goldman (Kingsmen), the series will not include the talents of showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. The pair has since signed on with Disney for a series of Star Wars films. The series is expected to take place thousands of years before the original series, during a period known as the Age of Heroes. The cast will include Naomi Watts (Twin Peaks, King King), Miranda Richardson (Harry Potter), as part of the lineup. Recent additions include Marquis Rodriguez (Manifest), John Simm (Strangers), Richard McCabe (Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams), John Heffernan (Dracula), and Dixie Egerickx (Summerland).

As for the Fire & Blood adaptation, there is no further production news.
