Jimmy Fallon as Nicolas Cage as Tiger King’s Joe Exotic is too many layers

It’s impression-ception!

Two scripted series based on the events depicted in the documentary series Tiger King have already been announced. One stars Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin. The other, announced yesterday, will star none other than Nicolas Cage as Joe Exotic.

Perhaps it was inevitable that this cavalcade of characterization would spawn its own impressions, as Jimmy Fallon debuted his take on Nicolas-Cage-as-Joe-Exotic on The Tonight Show, under the pretext that it was footage from Cage’s series. Fallon, dressed in various flashy, half-open shirts, a fake mustache, and a blond mullet wig, does his best Cage impression, though it devolves into something that feels more like an SNL “Californians” sketch by the end.

The clip also features Fallon in his own Joe Exotic music video, complete with bad special effects and lip-syncing. That said, the clip is less Fallon-as-Cage-as-Exotic and more Fallon-as-Cage-dressed-as-Exotic, so we’ll have to wait for a better sense of just how Cage will handle the Tiger King story.
