Enter the Shadow Fold with the first trailer for Netflix’s Shadow and Bone

The epic fantasy arrives this spring

The first trailer for Netflix’s adaptation of Shadow and Bone brings the ominous Shadow Fold — the tangible darkness that splits the kingdom of Ravka in two — to life. Alina Starkov (played here by Jessie Mei Li) faces the overwhelming darkness and unleashes her newfound power. The trailer also shows the mysterious General Kirrigan (Ben Barnes) aka the Darkling meeting Alina for the first time.

“You and I are going to change the world,” he tells her.

Writer Eric Heisserer (Arrival) adapted Shadow and Bone from Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling fantasy series. According to Heisserer, the show combines both the main trilogy of books set in the Imperial Russia-inspired country of Ravka (of which the first is titled Shadow and Bone), as well as the spinoff duology focusing on a group of criminals. The trailer teases both sets of characters, as well as the overarching conflict.

Shadow and Bone premieres on Netflix on April 23
