While I can understand why Overwatch’s characters could inspire fandoms, I question how much of its current troubles can be tied to a lack of lore or fanservice. I also don’t understand how anyone who is seriously enthusiastic about it from a lore perspective can square the lore with the fact that the game consists entirely of two teams of the same supposed allies fighting each other, alongside characters who are supposedly their enemies. And yes, I’ve read the shaky attempts at justification, but in the end the answer is "because it’s fun" and the lore is beside the point. Clearly the dissonance hasn’t hurt the game, which further underscores the idea that the lore isn’t that important to most players.

I will say that the thing that has always been lacking for me in most DreamWorks and many other non-Pixar animated films is not the visual style, but the hackneyed storytelling and desire to constantly make cheap attempts to wink at the audience rather than just tell a story (such as jokes that allude to pop culture of the moment). Though I’ll admit I haven’t seen them all, movies like Trolls, The Boss Baby, Hotel Transylvania, arguably Sing, just look godawful from a script perspective. Based on the trailers, I’m not sure The Bad Guys gives me hope DreamWorks is improving in that regard. It’s a lack of respect for the audience that’s the problem, not whether the trees and fabric look photorealistic.

Agreed with most of that, and having not read the book, I certainly can’t judge the system — but I can judge the review, which comes off as not only pretentious but seeming to be looking for an entirely different type of game than its creators were trying to make. Ultimately any group playing this game will take what is there and adapt it to their needs, and they probably don’t really need excessive hand-holding, morality mechanics or "safety tools" to do it. The only really valid criticism I can find is that it’s incomplete, which hopefully its creators will address sooner rather than later.
