Valheim dragon egg guide: Where to find them and how to use them

Look for purple eggs in the mountains

If you want to defeat Moder in Valheim, you need to find dragon eggs first. These elusive and massive eggs can only be found in the mountain biomes. Locating them can be a challenge.

In this Valheim guide, we’ll show you where to find dragon eggs. We’ll also explain what precautions to take when searching for them and what you need to know when transporting them to Moder’s summoning altar.

How to explore the mountains safely

To find dragon eggs, search mountain biomes, but before you start your trip, there’s a few things you need to do to safely explore the frozen peaks.

Learning how to craft a cauldron and a fermenter is an essential part of making the best potions in Valheim.

  • To craft a cauldron, all you need is 10 tin and a forge. Just make sure you place the cauldron above a roaring campfire or it won’t work.
  • To craft a fermenter, you’ll need 10 fine wood, 5 bronze, 10 resin, and a forge. Fermenters will need to be covered before they can work properly.

With those two crafted, brew a frost resistance mead (2 bloodbag, 1 Greydwarf eye, 10 honey, 5 thistle). Drinking some of this potion before heading up the mountains will defend you against the biome’s freezing effects for 10 minutes.

You can also learn how to craft wolf armor by either adventuring in the mountains once you’ve made your mead or after learning how to tame and breed wolves.

Once you’ve sufficiently learned how to stay warm on the mountains, then you can begin exploring.

Where to find dragon eggs in Valheim

Finding dragon eggs takes a bit of exploration. You’ll have to comb the peaks of mountain biomes looking for dragon nests. It may be a lengthy process that could force you to learn how to sail so you can explore multiple mountains.

To find a dragon’s egg, keep an eye out for glowing blue rocks. These stones are much easier to see at night. The dragon egg’s themselves will also have a faint purple aura to them. In our experience, the eggs are usually tucked up against a mountainside and aren’t really out in the open.

Once you’ve found a dragon’s egg, you have to consider their weight. Dragon eggs take up 200 points in your carrying capacity. To deal with this, you can find Haldor the merchant so you can buy the item he sells that lets you increase your inventory size.

Alternatively, you might think learning how to build a portal could be one way to transport eggs. Unfortunately, dragon eggs cannot be teleported. So you could clear your inventory to make multiple trips or work with a team to transport eggs to Moder’s altar.
