Watch us lose our minds over Puyo Puyo Tetris

What do you get when you put two stressful puzzle games together?

On an average day, video producer Simone de Rochefort and senior reporter Allegra Frank are calm, rational, hard-working individuals.

Throw in some rounds of Puyo Puyo Tetris, the new puzzle game crossover and hellscape simulator for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 and, well, you’ll quickly see a different side of them.

For an intense, sweat-inducing 60 minutes, Simone and Allegra toured through the game’s myriad multiplayer modes and lost their cool almost immediately. OK, well, to be clear, Simone was the one who really showed what happens when her puzzle-solving competitive side comes out. Puyo Puyo Tetris can do that to a girl.

This might sound frightening and, trust us, it is. But Puyo Puyo Tetris is actually an absurdly entertaining time. It lets players choose between the color-matching bubble-popping of Puyo Puyo or the geometric brain teasers of Tetris, and even has a mode that forces everyone to swap between the two types every 30 seconds. The combination of the two makes for a game that is immediately accessible and impossibly difficult in the most ceaselessly amusing way possible.

It’s a wild ride — so wild that even sweet-voiced producer Pat Gill can’t tame Simone and Allegra. (There’s even a special guest spot from producer Nick Robinson.) Join us above for what will surely go down as one of the most high-energy Polygon playthroughs you’ve ever seen.
