Watch 40 minutes of the Skaven gameplay from Total War: Warhammer 2

An interview with the developers at Creative Assembly

Charlie Hall is Polygon’s tabletop editor. In 10-plus years as a journalist & photographer, he has covered simulation, strategy, and spacefaring games, as well as public policy.

Recently the team at Creative Assembly announced that the Skaven are the fourth playable race in Total War: Warhammer 2. A few weeks back, we sat down with two members of the development team. They brought along gameplay video showing the Skaven in battle for the first time.

The Skaven are a race of malevolent, rat-like creatures that have been part of the Games Workshop Warhammer tabletop miniatures franchise since the beginning. Warhammer 2 will also feature the Lizardmen, High Elves and the Dark Elves. A free post-release update will allow owners of both Warhammer 2 and the original Total War: Warhammer to lead the Ratmen to victory over a combined world map.

Al Bickham, development communications manager and Sam Millen, lead development manager join us in the video. They provided more than 40 minutes from the start of the single-player campaign featuring Skaven lord Queek Headtaker. We’ve also included the raw gameplay below as a separate video.

Total War: Warhammer 2 is expected to launch on Sept. 28. For more, see our feature story from this year’s E3 in Los Angeles.
