Kingdom Hearts is a classic text, and the Video Game Theatre Players’ most recent interpretation hews almost impossibly close to the original.
This is rookie actress Jenna Stoeber’s first leading role, and she embodies Maleficent perfectly. Closing one’s eyes and simply listening to the words, one could be forgiven for believing that one is simply listening to the original Kingdom Hearts.
Simone de Rochefort, a veteran actress with no relation to myself, Simone de Rochefort, ably personifies Maleficent’s cruel, conflicted henchman, Riku. Her posture is so rigid that the audience begins to sweat, and does not stop.
If you are new to the Video Game Theatre, this is a perfect entry point. The whole family can enjoy this retelling of Kingdom Hearts and will benefit from seeing it in its live-action form. Previously, the Players enacted a darker scene, the death of Goofy from Kingdom Hearts 2.
