Anthem is the best-feeling BioWare game yet

The RPG studio is finally nailing action gameplay

Patrick Gill (he/him) has been making serious and unserious videos for Polygon since 2016. He also co-hosts & produces Polygon’s weekly livestreams on Twitch.

After half an hour of hands-on time with Anthem, and I’ve got to give it one hell of a backhanded compliment:

It doesn’t feel like a BioWare game. Anthem feels good.

BioWare is a studio that built its brand on RPG storytelling, but if you look at the Mass Effect series you can see its gradual expansion into a more action-oriented approach. While each successive Mass Effect game came closer to matching the feel of modern action shooters, there was always just enough clunkiness to remind you that it was an RPG first and an action game second.

That’s not the case in Anthem. Shooting is responsive and satisfying, but most importantly, movement feels great. Check out the video above for our full-hands on impressions of what may be the best-feeling BioWare game to date.
